Ospreys Fans Protest Proposed WRU-Y11 Cardiff Acquisition

Supporters of the Ospreys rugby team have staged protests opposing the proposed acquisition of Cardiff Rugby by their owners, Y11 Sport and Media, from the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU).

Swansea Council Applies for High Court Injunction

Swansea Council has formally applied for a High Court injunction aimed at halting the proposed transaction between the WRU and Y11 Sport and Media, the current owners of the Ospreys, to purchase Cardiff Rugby. This move comes amid concerns that the deal could threaten the existence of the Ospreys as a professional regional rugby team.

The Ospreys face the possibility of being removed from the professional tier, as Y11 is engaged in negotiations with the WRU as the preferred bidder to acquire Cardiff Rugby from the governing body. The WRU has expressed intentions to reduce the number of professional men's rugby teams in Wales from four to three, with the Ospreys potentially being the team to be cut if Y11 completes the purchase of Cardiff.

The WRU has been approached for comment regarding the ongoing negotiations and the council's legal action.

Council's Position and Legal Action

Swansea Council, which is pursuing redevelopment plans for the St Helen's ground—the home venue for the Ospreys—has indicated that it is seeking an urgent court hearing. This hearing could potentially be scheduled as early as this week. The decision to pursue the injunction was made by the Council's cabinet on Monday and received unanimous support across all political parties.

"The proposed deal between the WRU and Y11 to buy Cardiff Rugby would mean the end of the Ospreys as a men's professional regional rugby team playing in the URC," said a Swansea Council spokesperson.
"We are seeking an injunction to prevent this deal going ahead so that further discussions can take place while the current four team regional structure remains in place.
"The injunction would give all parties the opportunity to consider other options for the future of regional rugby in Wales.
"We believe this is a reasonable and proportionate action given the risk to the future of the Ospreys and the impact that would have on Swansea and the wider region.
"Players, supporters, residents, community clubs and local businesses stand together in support of the Ospreys remaining as one of Wales' four professional regional rugby sides."

Competition and Markets Authority Investigation Requested

In a separate development earlier this week, Swansea Council formally requested that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) investigate the proposed deal between the WRU and Y11. The Council's concerns focus on several key issues, including the proposed reduction of professional teams from four to three, the process by which licences are allocated, and the potential for a single ownership group to control two Welsh rugby clubs.
