Sir Gareth Edwards Steps Down from Cardiff RFC Board

Sir Gareth Edwards has officially resigned as a director of Cardiff Rugby Football Club, concluding over 22 years in this position. The announcement was made public by Companies House on Friday, noting the termination of appointment for three directors, including the renowned former scrum-half for Cardiff, Wales, and the British and Irish Lions.

Previously, Sir Gareth had stepped down as a director of Cardiff Blues in 2019 after serving 22 years on their board. His playing career with Cardiff spanned 12 seasons during which he appeared in 195 games and scored 67 tries. Additionally, he earned 53 consecutive Test caps for Wales, contributing to three Five Nations Grand Slam victories.

Recognized as the greatest player of all time in a 2003 poll, Sir Gareth was instrumental in the British and Irish Lions' successful Test series against New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974. One of his most celebrated moments includes a try scored for the Barbarians against the All Blacks in 1973, widely regarded as one of the greatest tries ever.

It is important to note that Cardiff Rugby Football Club operates as a separate entity from Cardiff Rugby Limited. The latter entered administration in April 2025, after which the Welsh Rugby Union assumed control of the company responsible for the elite professional regional team.
