Leicester Tigers Secure Play-Off Place with Victory Over Sale Sharks

Leicester Tigers captain Ollie Chessum opened the scoring among his side's seven tries as they defeated Sale Sharks 47-33 at the CorpAcq Stadium, securing their place in the Premiership play-offs.

The Tigers dominated the match, with early tries from Ollie Chessum, Jamie Blamire, and Joaquin Moro establishing a strong lead. Sale responded with tries from Tom Roebuck and Jacques Vermeulen, but Leicester extended their advantage with further scores from Joe Heyes, Will Wand, Ollie Hassell-Collins, and Archie van der Flier either side of halftime, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Late tries from Sale's Ernst van Rhyn, Sam Dugdale, and Arron Reed earned the Sharks a bonus point, but they were outplayed for the majority of the match.

Leicester, coming off a dominant win over Northampton Saints the previous week, wasted little time in opening the scoring. Within two minutes, following a break by Will Wand down the wing, Leicester recycled the ball down the short side. Ollie Hassell-Collins found space before passing to Chessum, who scored unchallenged.

Sale quickly responded with a well-executed try. After a ruck, Rekeiti Ma'asi-White accelerated before passing to Joe Carpenter. Although Carpenter appeared to hold the ball too long, he managed to recycle it, allowing Roebuck to complete the move and score in the corner.

Blamire restored Leicester's lead by rolling over from an attacking maul as Sale's defence faltered. Shortly after, Leicester capitalised on a splintered Sale scrum, with Moro diving over to increase the lead to 16 points.

Sale, having spent much of the first half in their own half, gained some momentum when Leicester were penalised at their own scrum. Raffi Quirke made a break towards the try line but was tackled short. Vermeulen then exploited a gap to score an unexpected try.

Leicester maintained their composure and secured their try bonus point just before halftime. Joe Heyes, marking his 100th club start, powered over from close range as Sale's defence again showed vulnerabilities.

Early in the second half, Wand extended Leicester's lead with his 13th try of the season. Facing a strong defensive line, he kicked ahead into Sale's 22, regathered the high bouncing ball ahead of Roebuck, and scored.

Sale struggled to match Leicester's pace and quick ball, conceding two more tries through Hassell-Collins and the powerful Van der Flier.

Despite three late tries from Sale's Van Rhyn, Dugdale, and Reed, the scoreline did not reflect the overall dominance of Leicester, who controlled the match for 60 minutes.

Leicester remain third in the Premiership and face challenging fixtures against Exeter Chiefs and Bath as they aim for a home semi-final. Sale remain in seventh place.
