James Lowe's Record-Breaking 100th Leinster Cap
James Lowe scored his record-breaking 70th and 71st tries on his 100th Leinster appearance.
Uncertainty Surrounds Lowe's Future
The future of Ireland and Leinster wing James Lowe remains uncertain following his historic performance against the Lions. The 33-year-old's contract is set to expire at the end of the current season, with no indication of a new agreement as yet.
Lowe achieved his 70th and 71st tries during Leinster's United Rugby Championship quarter-final match against the Lions on Saturday, surpassing Shane Horgan's long-standing try record. The match ended in a 59-10 victory, securing Leinster a semi-final spot against the Stormers.
Coach Leo Cullen Declines to Comment on Contract Status
After the game, head coach Leo Cullen refrained from providing any updates regarding Lowe's contract situation.
"Listen, James will come out in terms of his own individual piece, so, it's not really right for me to comment on him at this moment in time,"
Cullen, who had previously stated before the match that "conversations are always ongoing" but acknowledged that "some people will move on," chose to keep the matter private.
Lowe's Impact Since Arriving in Ireland
Since relocating to Ireland in 2017 from the Chiefs in New Zealand, Lowe has become a vital player for both Leinster and Ireland internationally. Should he leave Leinster and move abroad, it would likely end his eligibility for selection by Ireland head coach Andy Farrell for the 2027 World Cup in Australia.
Lowe made his Ireland debut in 2020 after qualifying through residency and has since scored 17 tries in 45 international caps. He played a significant role in Ireland's Six Nations championship victories in 2023 and 2024. Additionally, Lowe represented the British and Irish Lions during their series win over Australia last summer.
Contract Situations and Recent Performances
Prior to Ireland's Six Nations victory over Scotland in March, which secured the Triple Crown, Farrell expressed expectations that both Lowe and centre Bundee Aki would sign new contracts. While Aki has agreed to a one-year extension with Connacht, no progress has been reported regarding Lowe's contract, who is contracted through Leinster rather than centrally by the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).
Lowe was not included in the squad for the Champions Cup final defeat against Bordeaux, despite having returned from a hamstring injury sustained during the Six Nations win over England. Nevertheless, his two record-breaking tries in the recent quarter-final demonstrate his continued threat when fit and available.
Cullen Praises Lowe's Contribution to Leinster
Although Cullen declined to comment on Lowe's future, he acknowledged the significant impact Lowe has had since joining Leinster nine years ago.
"He's been a great character in the group. Very, very different, you know, what he brings, great energy,"
"Internally, we had a video there just in terms of some of the stuff that he's done in a Leinster jersey over his career.
"There's not many James Lowes running around the streets that we've come across so far. He's been a great addition to the group over the years."
