Harlequins delivered a stunning 41-24 comeback victory over Exeter Chiefs, significantly impacting Exeter's hopes of securing a top-four finish and boosting their own prospects for Champions Cup rugby next season.
Exeter, positioned fourth and leading 24-14 at halftime, appeared poised to strengthen their chances of competing for a Premiership final spot. However, a dynamic and youthful Harlequins side dominated the second half, scoring 27 unanswered points. This result leaves Exeter facing challenging fixtures against Leicester and Saracens as they strive to secure a place in the post-season.
The Allianz Stadium at Twickenham presented contrasting narratives across the two halves. While Exeter controlled the first half, scoring four tries and earning a bonus point, they struggled to match Harlequins' intensity after the break.
Exeter made several changes in an attempt to regain momentum and control but were unable to do so. Harlequins capitalized, crossing the try line four times in the second half. The Chiefs also finished the match with a player short following a late yellow card.
The opening half showed no indication of the eventual outcome. Exeter quickly established a 12-0 lead within the first ten minutes, with Campbell Ridl and Stephen Varney scoring tries following excellent build-up play from Harvey Skinner and Paul Brown-Bampoe, respectively.
Brown-Bampoe powered down the right wing, overpowering multiple Harlequins defenders, while Skinner's kicking was both incisive and accurate.
Jack Kenningham responded with a try for Harlequins, converted by Marcus Smith, narrowing the deficit to 12-7. However, Exeter extended their lead when hooker Max Norey finished a well-executed lineout move on 26 minutes, followed by Len Ikitau's powerful angled run six minutes later, suggesting the Chiefs were on course for a commanding win.
Despite this, the second half belonged to Harlequins. Luke Northmore capitalized on a possible Exeter knock-on to score a try four minutes before halftime, maintaining pressure on the Chiefs.
After the break, Harlequins dominated proceedings. Cadan Murley moved into second place on the club's all-time top-flight try scorer list by finishing a break initiated by Cameron Anderson.
Jamie Benson's powerful run set up Will Porter for another try. Following a penalty awarded against Exeter for not releasing the ball, Smith successfully kicked three points, putting Harlequins ahead for the first time at the 68-minute mark.
Alex Dombrandt and Chandler Cunningham-South combined to create space for Will Evans, who scored on the right wing after drawing the Exeter defense.
Exeter's resistance waned further after Bachuki Tchumbadze received a 10-minute yellow card. In the closing moments, Boris Wenger intercepted a pass and ran in a try, adding gloss to Harlequins' impressive second-half performance.
