Castleford Claims First Super League Victory
Castleford's victory lifted them off the bottom of the Super League table, with Huddersfield Giants taking their place at the bottom following the match.
Tries were scored by Hood, McIntosh, Lawler, Weaver (2), and Golding, with Weaver successfully converting five goals.
Ashton Golding marked his Castleford debut with a try against his former club, Huddersfield Giants, completing the Tigers' first Super League win of the season.
Early tries from Liam Hood, Darnell McIntosh, and George Lawler had Castleford comfortably ahead within the first 30 minutes. However, Jacob Gagai narrowed the gap just before halftime, making the score 16-4.
In the second half, Tom Weaver scored two important tries, with George Flanagan adding one for Huddersfield in between, helping Castleford secure their first win under head coach Ryan Carr.
The most celebrated moment of the evening was Golding's try, a memorable first for his new club against the team he departed after five years at the end of the previous season.
Match Context and Team Conditions
The early season performances and challenges faced by the West Yorkshire rivals had been similar prior to their encounter at the OneBore Stadium. Both teams had yet to register a win, had no points, and were affected by injuries.
Castleford's captain, Alex Mellor, was the latest player to be sidelined after suffering a broken leg in the previous week's defeat at Toulouse. Huddersfield Giants were also missing several regular players due to long-term injuries, including Liam Sutcliff, Joe Greenwood, and Harry Rushton.
France international Tanguy Zenon started for Huddersfield just two days after joining the club. Castleford introduced Wigan loanee George Hirst and former Giants players Jack Ashworth and Ashton Golding for their debuts.
Game Progression
Liam Hood gave Castleford an ideal start by scoring his second try of the season after Joe Stimson was tackled close to the line.
Darnell McIntosh extended the lead with a try, capitalizing on a disorganized Huddersfield defense that had been pinned back following a reckless penalty by Taane Milne for a high tackle on Krystian Mapapalangi.
Milne was sin-binned when George Lawler scored Castleford's third try under the posts in the 26th minute. Despite this, Huddersfield finished the half stronger. Zenon was denied a try by a tackle from Mikaele Ravalawa, but Jacob Gagai scored in the 38th minute to reduce the deficit.
Huddersfield continued to pose a threat in the second half but failed to capitalize on opportunities. Tom Weaver scored following a well-executed grubber kick from Daejarn Asi, extending Castleford's lead to 18 points.
George Flanagan responded with a try for Huddersfield, giving the Giants renewed hope. However, Weaver's second try and Golding's subsequent score secured the victory for Castleford, prompting enthusiastic celebrations.
