Severe Crashes Impact Catalonia MotoGP
Rider Alex Marquez sustained a fractured neck and a broken collarbone following a high-speed crash during the Catalonia MotoGP race.
The event was interrupted twice with red flags due to accidents, before Fabio di Giannantonio secured victory in Barcelona.
The Italian Ducati rider claimed the win on the third restart, finishing ahead of Joan Mir and Fermin Aldeguer.
Details of the Crashes
Two major crashes halted the race, with Marquez involved in a serious collision after colliding with the rear of Pedro Acosta's bike.
Acosta was leading on lap 12 of 24 when his motorcycle suddenly lost power on a straight section. He attempted to warn the riders behind him, but second-placed Marquez was unable to react in time, resulting in a collision with the KTM.
Following the impact, Marquez and his Ducati were propelled towards the wall and then cartwheeled through the air.
Marquez was transported by ambulance and did not participate in the race restart. His team, Gresini Racing, confirmed he remained conscious.
Subsequent medical evaluations revealed Marquez has a marginal fracture of the C7 vertebra, the lowest bone in the neck, which requires further assessment.
Additionally, he sustained a fracture to his right clavicle (collarbone), which will be stabilized with a plate during surgery scheduled for Sunday.
Di Giannantonio was struck by debris from the crash but managed to continue and ultimately win the race.
Additional Incidents and Reactions
Former Moto2 champion Johann Zarco was also hospitalized after crashing during the restart, which caused the second red flag. Zarco is undergoing tests on his left leg after becoming entangled with his motorcycle.
"Today has not been an easy day for everybody. I really hope that Alex is fine," Di Giannantonio said.
"We've been really lucky. We know that our sport is amazing. We try to give an amazing show, but also we are humans and we are in danger. So I really hope that everybody is safe."
Reigning champion Marc Marquez, Alex's brother, was absent from the race due to a fractured foot sustained in France the previous weekend.
