R&A in Dialogue with Muirfield for Open Championship Return

Muirfield has a rich history of hosting the Open Championship, having done so on 16 occasions. The R&A's chief executive, Mark Darbon, has confirmed that there is an "ongoing dialogue" with Muirfield regarding the possibility of bringing the Open Championship back to the Gullane course.

Darbon also highlighted that there are "challenges" associated with reinstating the event at Turnberry, a course owned by former US President Donald Trump.

Looking ahead, Royal Lytham & St Annes is scheduled to host the Open Championship in 2028. The 154th edition of the tournament is set to take place this year at Royal Birkdale, with next year's event planned for The Old Course at St Andrews.

Additionally, Muirfield will be the venue for this year's Women's Amateur Championship, which will run from 22 to 27 June.

"We've got a great ongoing dialogue with Muirfield," Darbon said.
"There are some things we need to overcome to facilitate a modern Open Championship - the practice ground is one of those, along with a few on-course infrastructural points."

Regarding Turnberry, Darbon commented:

"We really like the golf course.
But there are challenges around staging a modern Open - primarily road, rail and accommodation infrastructure."
