Russell Tops Chinese GP Practice Session
George Russell secured the fastest time in the sole practice session at the Chinese Grand Prix, leading a Mercedes one-two finish with teammate Kimi Antonelli before the sprint weekend commences.
Russell's lap was over 0.7 seconds quicker than the nearest non-Mercedes driver, McLaren's Oscar Piastri. This gap closely mirrors the advantage Mercedes demonstrated during the season-opening Australian Grand Prix last weekend.
Antonelli finished 0.120 seconds behind Russell, while Piastri was 0.736 seconds adrift. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and McLaren's Lando Norris followed closely behind.
Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton recorded the sixth fastest time, 1.388 seconds slower than Russell's pace. Hamilton's time was set early in the session on older tyres after an early spin compromised his set of medium tyres.
Ferrari employed an innovative rear wing design featuring a flap that opens for straight-line speed by rotating on its axis more than 180 degrees, differing from the conventional method where a gap opens by lifting the front of the flap.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen was eighth, trailing the Mercedes pace by a significant 1.8 seconds and positioned behind the Haas driven by British rookie Oliver Bearman.
British newcomer Arvid Lindblad completed only six laps before his Racing Bulls car experienced a reliability issue on the long back straight. Smoke emitted from the engine airbox forced him to retire at the hairpin.
Sprint qualifying is scheduled to begin at 07:30 UK time.
