Norris Secures McLaren's First Win of the Season in Miami Sprint
Lando Norris claimed victory in the Miami Grand Prix sprint race in 2025, delivering McLaren's first win of the season with a commanding performance from pole position. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, went on to win the main grand prix.
Norris, the world champion, converted his pole position into an immediate lead at the first corner and maintained control throughout the race without significant challenge.
The race concluded with a McLaren one-two finish, as Piastri trailed Norris but managed to fend off Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in the final laps.
Antonelli Penalised After On-Track Battle
Kimi Antonelli initially secured fourth place after a close contest with Mercedes driver George Russell. However, Antonelli received a five-second penalty for repeatedly exceeding track limits, which relegated him behind Russell and Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Verstappen had earlier emerged ahead following a tense duel with Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari.
Post-Race Reactions
"Nice to be back on the top step, even if it is the sprint," Norris said. "It was a good day for us, massive job to the team in bringing the upgrades. It feels like everyone is saying the same thing, but ours have really helped this weekend."
The British driver's win, aided by significant upgrades to the McLaren car for the fourth race weekend of the season, marked a strong statement after a challenging start for the reigning world champions.
Race Dynamics and Strategy
Norris managed his race carefully, preserving his medium tyres in the early laps before extending his lead over Piastri to assert control. Piastri stayed close initially, while Leclerc held off a pack including Mercedes drivers Hamilton and Russell, and Red Bull's Verstappen.
Leclerc eventually distanced himself from the group and pressured Piastri, but the Australian responded by increasing his gap again in the final two laps.
Antonelli and Russell Battle
Antonelli experienced his fifth consecutive poor start of the season and was challenged by Russell side by side at the first corner, with Russell on the inside line. Antonelli defended successfully initially, but Russell overtook him on lap seven at the first corner. Antonelli reclaimed fourth place a lap later at Turn 11, located at the end of the long back straight, and maintained that position until the finish. The penalty reduced Antonelli's championship lead over Russell to seven points.
"I didn't even drive well, I made a lot of mistakes, I got track limits, which is something I need to avoid," Antonelli admitted.
Russell commented, "I'm two places forward but not much happier. The improvements from Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull are daunting."
Verstappen and Hamilton Incident
Behind the Mercedes drivers, Verstappen forced his way past Hamilton at Turn Three on the first lap, with the two cars making wheel-to-wheel contact. Hamilton regained the position when Verstappen's battery failed to deploy exiting the final corner of the opening lap.
The pair remained close until Verstappen passed Hamilton on lap seven. However, the move resulted in both drivers running off track, and Verstappen was instructed to relinquish the position back to Hamilton, his 2021 title rival.
Two laps later, Verstappen successfully overtook Hamilton by out-braking him into the final corner.
Other Race Results and Disqualification
Alpine's Pierre Gasly secured the final point for eighth place, finishing ahead of Red Bull's Isack Hadjar and Gasly's teammate Franco Colapinto.
Gabriel Bortoleto initially finished 11th on track but was later disqualified due to his Audi's engine intake air pressure exceeding the maximum permitted limit.
