Welcome to the Australian Grand Prix Qualifying

Greetings, this is Joey Lynch bringing you live coverage of the opening round of the 2026 Formula 1 season from a somewhat cloudy Melbourne.

The buildup to this new season has been extensive, reaching a dramatic peak in the past two weeks due to geopolitical tensions. The conflict involving the United States and Israel's attack on Iran escalated into rocket and drone strikes, resulting in the closure of airspace and flight cancellations across the Middle East.

This situation not only disrupted preparations but also compelled up to a thousand members of the F1 travelling entourage to adjust their travel plans to ensure timely arrival in Australia. Fortunately, nearly all have managed to arrive as scheduled.

New Regulations and Car Developments

The event at Albert Park this year is significant as it marks the first competition under the comprehensive new regulations introduced for 2026. These rules have led to smaller and lighter cars designed to enhance agility and improve racing quality, powered by new hybrid engines.

The first opportunity to observe these new cars was during the first and second practice sessions (FP1 and FP2) held yesterday. Mercedes-powered teams met expectations by posting the fastest times in FP2, while Ferrari showed strong performance in FP1. However, much of the day's focus was drawn away by ongoing issues at Aston Martin, including concerns about car vibrations that could potentially affect driver Fernando Alonso's performance.

Qualifying Session Details

Today's qualifying session promises to be exciting and is scheduled to begin at 4pm AEDT (5am GMT).
