Yang's Double Secures Vital Win for Celtic
Hyun-jun Yang's two goals were instrumental in Celtic's crucial 3-1 victory over Motherwell.
If Celtic manage to overcome a challenging season and claim the Scottish Premiership title in May, the hard-fought win against Motherwell may be remembered as a pivotal moment in their campaign.
While the comeback following Elijah Just's goal for Motherwell highlighted the resilience instilled by manager Martin O'Neill, the standout performer in the match was an unexpected figure in a season full of surprises.
Initially, Yang was expected to be part of Birmingham City's Championship squad after being deemed surplus to requirements at Celtic last summer. However, a transfer move fell through, and he appeared set to remain a fringe player under Brendan Rodgers, making only limited appearances before Rodgers' departure in October.
Under Wilfried Nancy, Yang was briefly deployed as a wing-back but seemed sidelined during the latter half of the season as Celtic looked toward the January transfer window.
Yang's Scoring Surge Fuels Title Race
Contrary to expectations, Yang has netted six league goals since Christmas, contributing significantly as Celtic maintain their pursuit of the title.
Only three players—Tawanda Maswanhise, Youssef Chermiti, and teammate Benjamin Nygren—have scored more goals in the league during this period.
In the match at Celtic Park, while Motherwell's Maswanhise failed to score, Yang delivered two decisive goals: a composed finish to equalize and a powerful strike to secure Celtic's third goal, effectively ending Motherwell's slim hopes of winning the title.
"He was sensational," Celtic manager Martin O'Neill said. "Sensational in every aspect of the game.
Going forward, with the goals he scored, the energy and the willingness to work back, it was a monumental performance by him."
O'Neill noted that the 23-year-old was "on a high" in the dressing room after the match, reflecting a performance that validates why Celtic signed him from Gangwon FC nearly three years ago.
Yang's recent form may also dispel any speculation about the club seeking to transfer him again this summer.
Consistent Threat and Impressive Efficiency
Yang's impact extends beyond a few key goals; statistical analysis reveals his growth into a reliable offensive threat.
Only Benjamin Nygren has exceeded his expected goals (xG) more than Yang, who has six goals from an xG of 3.82.
Remarkably, Yang boasts the highest conversion rate among league players with 20 or more shots, surpassing Nygren, Chermiti, Aberdeen's Kevin Nisbet, and Falkirk's Barney Stewart. This suggests Celtic might have benefited from utilizing him more frequently.
Looking Ahead: Yang's Role in the Title Run-In
As Celtic continue their pursuit of league leaders Hearts, O'Neill has multiple attacking options to consider. However, following Yang's "wonderful" performance, the manager is likely to prioritize keeping him in the starting lineup and maintaining his form.
The failed summer transfer was a turning point for Yang, who had struggled to establish himself previously.
Continued performances like the one against Motherwell could prove crucial in Celtic's quest for a successful league campaign.
