Willie Kirk Returns to English Football as Durham Head Coach

Willie Kirk has been named head coach of Women's Super League 2 club Durham, marking his return to English football two years after his dismissal from Leicester City Women. Kirk, 48, was sacked in March 2024 following an internal investigation that concluded he had engaged in a physical relationship with a player, which violated the club's code of conduct.

Although such relationships are not illegal provided no minors are involved, the decision to dismiss Kirk was based on the breach of Leicester City's internal policies. Durham's official announcement of Kirk's appointment did not reference his previous departure from Leicester City.

Clubs in the Women's Super League are required to enforce codes of conduct for players and management as part of their licensing criteria, including the appointment of safeguarding officers to ensure player welfare.

has contacted Durham for comment regarding the appointment, as well as the Football Association (FA) and the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA).

Concerns Over Player-Coach Relationships in Women's Football

Relationships between players and coaches in women's football have drawn criticism due to concerns about power imbalances within squads and the potential risks posed to young female athletes. England manager Sarina Wiegman has characterized such relationships as "very inappropriate" and "not healthy."

Following his dismissal, Kirk publicly sought a second chance in the sport. A year after leaving Leicester, he revealed that despite applying for every vacancy in the WSL and the second tier of English women's football—except at Arsenal and Manchester City—he had not been granted an interview.

Kirk's Appointment at Durham and Career Background

Speaking about his new role, Kirk expressed enthusiasm for joining Durham and contributing to the club's development.

"Durham has established itself as a respected club with strong values and a clear identity, and I'm excited by the opportunity to work with the players and staff to build on those foundations," Kirk said.
"I believe in creating an environment where people are challenged, supported and driven to improve every day."

Durham concluded the previous season in 10th place in the Women's Super League 2. In March, the club announced that head coach Adam Furness would transition to a different role within the organization.

Kirk joins Durham after recently departing from Swedish top-tier club Djurgardens. He also managed Linkoping in the Damallsvenskan during the previous year. Over a 16-year career in women's football, Kirk has held managerial positions at Everton, Bristol City, and Hibernian, and served as an assistant coach at Manchester United.

Durham Women director Lee Sanders commented on the appointment:

"We're delighted to have Willie coaching the first-team. His experience and track record of success in developing top players speaks for itself."
