Sam Kerr's Impact at Chelsea
Sam Kerr joined Chelsea in 2020 in what was the largest transfer in Women's Super League (WSL) history, bringing with her high expectations as a striker. Over six and a half years at the club, Kerr has surpassed all expectations and is regarded as one of Chelsea's greatest players and a standout in the WSL.
The 32-year-old Australia captain has confirmed she will leave Chelsea at the end of the current season, concluding a trophy-filled career in England.
The Australian forward has been one of the most prolific goalscorers in women's football over the past decade, securing 11 major trophies with Chelsea. Her goal-scoring repertoire has included powerful headers, audacious lobs, and acrobatic backflips, showcasing her versatility and skill during her time in London.
Kerr transferred from Chicago Red Stars in January 2020, following an agreement with then-Chelsea manager Emma Hayes. Although she left the United States six years ago, Kerr remains the all-time leading scorer in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She also held the Australian W-League scoring record upon her Chelsea arrival and currently ranks third on that list.
During her time in the US, Kerr won the Golden Boot three consecutive years, with her final tally of 18 goals in a single season standing as the highest until Temwa Chawinga scored 21 in 2024.
At Chelsea, Kerr continued her scoring exploits, netting 16 goals in 29 games across all competitions this season and becoming the club's all-time top scorer in the WSL with 64 goals. She has won the Golden Boot twice and was named WSL Player of the Season in 2022, as well as the PFA Fans' Player of the Year in both 2021 and 2022.
In 2023, Kerr finished second in the Ballon d'Or voting after scoring 29 goals in 38 appearances, helping Chelsea secure a WSL and FA Cup double.
Kerr’s 158th and potentially final appearance for Chelsea could take place on Saturday as the club concludes the season at home against Manchester United. She leaves as Chelsea’s fourth-highest appearance maker and could equal the club’s all-time leading scorer Fran Kirby’s tally of 112 goals if she scores in that match.
Her goals have often been decisive, with 22 of her strikes serving as winning goals in WSL matches. Kerr has also scored in five FA Cup finals and five League Cup finals, underscoring her impact in crucial games. Throughout her Chelsea tenure, she has won five WSL titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups, and the Community Shield.

Factors Leading to Kerr's Departure
Kerr’s status as Chelsea’s leading striker was undisputed until she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in January 2024. The injury sidelined her for over 18 months, and she only returned to full fitness in the latter half of the current season, after Chelsea’s title challenge had diminished.
During her absence in the 2024-25 season, Chelsea remained unbeaten domestically and won the treble under new manager Sonia Bompastor.
Off the pitch, Kerr faced challenges as well. In 2025, she was found not guilty of causing racially aggravated harassment against a Metropolitan Police officer following a widely publicized court case that sparked controversy. This led to calls in Australia to remove her from the captaincy, and Kerr subsequently maintained a lower profile in England.
During this period of change, Kerr married former West Ham midfielder Kristie Mewis, and their son was born in May of the previous year.
With Kerr sidelined, Bompastor sought alternative attacking options. England forward Lauren James stepped up, and the addition of USA’s Alyssa Thompson this season added further quality. England’s Aggie Beever-Jones, a natural striker, has also been part of the squad, though injuries have limited her appearances. Colombian star Mayra Ramirez has not featured at all in the 2025-26 season, highlighting ongoing challenges in the number nine position.
Kerr started only four WSL matches this season, and despite scoring six goals and providing two assists in 17 appearances, her departure was anticipated.
She regained form during the Asian Cup in March, scoring four goals in six matches as Australia finished runners-up to Japan. Upon returning to Chelsea, Kerr started six consecutive games, including the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City, where she scored despite the team’s defeat. This demonstrated that she remains a prolific goalscorer with much to offer.

Future Prospects for Kerr and Chelsea
Kerr’s next destination remains uncertain, though sources close to her suggest a return to the NWSL in the United States is possible. Australian broadcaster 10 News reported last month that Kerr had agreed to join Denver Summit, but the striker denied this on social media.
Replacing Kerr will be a significant challenge for Chelsea. Manager Sonia Bompastor has confirmed that acquiring a number nine is a top priority for the summer transfer window.
The club is undergoing a transitional phase, with several senior players departing this year, including captain Millie Bright, midfielder Guro Reiten, and striker Catarina Macario. Given the injury issues and lack of depth in attacking positions this season, Chelsea aims to recruit established talent to strengthen their squad following a disappointing campaign by their standards.
Manchester City’s top scorer Khadija Shaw is reportedly Chelsea’s primary target, but whoever is signed will face the challenge of filling Kerr’s considerable shoes.
Despite limited fitness this season, Kerr will finish as Chelsea’s highest scorer across all competitions and the only player to reach double figures. Since the start of last season in the WSL, Beever-Jones has scored 13 goals, with Lauren James next on eight. Kerr scored six goals despite missing over a year due to injury, highlighting the gap Chelsea must address to rebuild their frontline and compete at the highest European level.
