Scotland's World Cup Hopes Hang in Balance After Brazil Defeat

Scotland's chance to reach the last 32 of the World Cup is no longer in their own hands following a 3-0 loss to Brazil in their final group-stage match.

Fans are now relying on Scotland advancing as one of the eight best third-placed teams across all groups. The team may have to wait until Sunday to learn if they will progress to the knockout rounds for the first time.

With a tense few days ahead, outlines the key factors and scenarios that could still see Scotland advance.

What Each Team Needs to Qualify for the Knockouts

How Can Scotland Advance as a Third-Placed Team?

By now, many are aware that finishing third in the group stage can still lead to progression. Of the 12 teams finishing third in their groups, eight will move on to the knockout phase.

If teams are tied on points in the third-place rankings, goal difference is the deciding factor. Scotland must hope that at least four other third-placed teams either fail to reach three points or have a worse goal difference than Scotland.

Currently, five third-placed teams are ranked below Scotland, and five others have the same number of points, with four of those still having a game remaining.

The 3-0 loss negatively impacted Scotland's goal difference, which now stands at -3.

According to Opta statistics, teams with three points and a -3 goal difference have only a 42% chance of advancing, compared to 63% for -2 and 84% for -1.

Scotland's prospects diminished further after South Africa's unexpected victory over South Korea, who dropped into third place with three points but a superior goal difference.

What Results Does Scotland Need to Qualify?

With nine groups still to complete their matches, Scotland requires at least four teams to finish below them in the third-place rankings.

This means Scotland needs a minimum of four of the following outcomes to occur:

  • Group E: Both Ecuador (vs Germany) and Curacao (vs Ivory Coast) must fail to win, or Curacao must win by at least four goals while Ecuador fails to win.
  • Group F: Sweden must lose to Japan by four or more goals.
  • Group D: Paraguay and Australia, both on three points, face each other. A draw would see both advance. Scotland needs Paraguay to lose by two or more goals or Australia to be defeated by at least four goals.
  • Group F: Senegal and Iraq must draw, or Iraq must beat Senegal by no more than two goals.
  • Group H: Uruguay must lose to Spain.
  • Group G: Iran must lose to Egypt.
  • Group L: Croatia must lose to Ghana by at least three goals.
  • Group K: DR Congo vs Uzbekistan must end in a draw, or Uzbekistan must win by no more than three goals.
  • Group J: Similar to Group D, Austria and Algeria are on three points. A draw would see both advance. Scotland needs Algeria to lose by two or more goals or Austria to be beaten by at least four goals.
