Relegation Battle Narrows to West Ham and Tottenham

Nuno Espirito Santo (left) assumed managerial duties at West Ham in September, while Roberto de Zerbi (right) was appointed Tottenham Hotspur boss in March.

With only two matches remaining in the Premier League season and Burnley and Wolves already relegated, the final spot to drop into the Championship will be decided between Tottenham and West Ham.

Currently, Spurs occupy 17th place, holding a two-point advantage over 18th-placed West Ham after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Monday. Tottenham also possess a superior goal difference.

Although securing a point was valuable, Roberto de Zerbi's side missed the opportunity to extend their lead over West Ham to four points. Tottenham remain without a home league victory since December 6.

"If we want to win, we have to reduce the mistakes," said De Zerbi.

West Ham experienced a setback when Callum Wilson's stoppage-time equaliser was disallowed by VAR during their 1-0 defeat to league leaders Arsenal on Sunday, leaving them in a precarious position.

"It's going to be tough [to stay up] - we know it is not in our hands," said manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

"We will fight for it and we will keep on fighting."

Upcoming Fixtures for Tottenham and West Ham

With Leeds, Crystal Palace, and Nottingham Forest having secured their Premier League status following last weekend's results, Tottenham and West Ham face dwindling opportunities to avoid relegation.

According to the Opta supercomputer, Tottenham have a 19.5% chance of relegation compared to an 80.5% probability for West Ham.

West Ham will visit Newcastle United at St James' Park this Saturday, two days before Tottenham's match against Chelsea.

If West Ham secure a victory at Newcastle — having defeated the Magpies 3-1 at home in November — they would move into 17th place, pushing Tottenham into the relegation zone by a point.

Any result other than a West Ham win would favor Tottenham, who could then guarantee their survival by winning at Chelsea.

However, Tottenham's prospects at Stamford Bridge are historically challenging, with only one victory there since 1990, a 3-1 win in April 2018.

If the relegation battle extends to the final day on May 24, both teams will host matches: Tottenham against Everton and West Ham against Leeds.

'Spurs Still in Relegation Driving Seat'

The draw with Leeds felt like an opportunity missed. I felt like we deserve to win, but we just weren't clinical in front of goal.

However, we are still in the driving seat, and we need a minimum of four points to stay in the Premier League.

I feel confident [Tottenham can stay up] because in the past four games, we've picked up eight points - two wins and two draws - and there is a real belief and confidence under Roberto de Zerbi.

But one of the remaining games is Chelsea at Stamford Bridge - and we've only won there once in 36 years, so that's going to be tough.

I'm glad De Zerbi came in when he did; it was certainly a waste of time with [former interim head coach] Igor Tudor, his 44-day stint.

But De Zerbi seems to be getting a tune out of these players, so I live in hope.

We're going to now watch West Ham travel to Newcastle, and hopefully they don't pick any points up there, then Spurs need to just go and get a result at Chelsea.

'Tense Final Day if West Ham Beat Newcastle'

West Ham's controversial home loss to Arsenal on Sunday was a difficult moment for the club.

However, Tottenham's draw with Leeds means hope remains for a late-season survival push in east London.

If the fight reaches the final day, West Ham would be favored to prevail. They have lost only once in their last seven home matches (W3, D3), and with passionate fan support similar to that seen against Arsenal, they would enter the match as favorites against Leeds, who have little at stake.

If West Ham trail Tottenham by two points heading into the final day, they would require former manager David Moyes to help by leading Everton to victory over Spurs. A draw would not suffice due to West Ham's inferior goal difference.

Everton's motivation to qualify for European competition could make a win plausible, while Tottenham have managed only two home wins all season.

Ideally, West Ham would prefer to control their fate without relying on other results. If that scenario unfolds, confidence in their survival prospects is higher. Otherwise, depending on external outcomes is less than ideal.

Either way, the upcoming weekend is critical. West Ham could face relegation by Monday night or find themselves just 90 minutes from Premier League safety.

I'm not sure my heart can take any more.

'Recent Form Tells Two Different Stories'

With only two matches remaining, the relegation contest between Tottenham and West Ham is finely balanced, yet their recent performances diverge significantly.

Tottenham have stabilized somewhat under Roberto de Zerbi, remaining unbeaten in their last four games (W2 D2). This is their longest undefeated streak this season and indicates growing resilience after a turbulent campaign.

Their previous longest unbeaten run of five matches occurred in December and January, a period now distant.

Momentum has been elusive for Spurs this season, making their current run notable.

Conversely, West Ham are faltering at a critical juncture. A defeat at Newcastle would mark their third consecutive loss, a pattern that has occurred twice before under Nuno Espirito Santo, in October and December.

When West Ham's results decline, they tend to do so rapidly, with damaging spells throughout the season pulling them back into danger.

Tottenham retain control over their destiny, while West Ham's margin for error narrows. The outcome of the next two matches may well depend on which team maintains composure under pressure.
