Wales to Face Romania in June Friendly

Craig Bellamy's Wales team, having been defeated by Bosnia-Herzegovina in their World Cup play-off semi-final last month, will compete against Romania in a friendly match in Bucharest on Saturday, 6 June.

Following their failure to qualify for the upcoming World Cup, Wales will face Romania—who were also eliminated in last month's World Cup play-offs—at the 31,000-capacity Steaua Stadium.

This encounter marks the first meeting between the two nations since the notable 1993 match in Cardiff, where Paul Bodin missed a penalty, resulting in Wales losing their chance to qualify for the 1994 World Cup.

During the same qualifying campaign, Wales suffered a 5-1 defeat at the Steaua Stadium in May 1992.

The upcoming trip to Romania will occur four days after Wales host Ghana in another friendly at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, 2 June.

The kick-off time for the Romania match is yet to be confirmed.

FAW Pays Tribute to Mircea Lucescu

Upon announcing the fixture, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) expressed condolences following the recent passing of the legendary former Romania manager Mircea Lucescu.

"The Football Association of Wales sends its condolences to Lucescu's family, friends and everyone at the Romanian Football Federation," the FAW stated.

Context of Recent World Cup Play-offs

Wales' hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup ended with a penalty shootout loss to Bosnia-Herzegovina in the play-off semi-final last month. Romania experienced a similar fate, being defeated by Turkey at the same stage.

Preparation for Nations League A

The friendlies against Ghana and Romania will provide Wales with opportunities to prepare for the Nations League A campaign scheduled for the autumn.
