Spurs Face Crisis After Heavy Champions League Defeat

Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven has described the club's situation as a "doomsday scenario" following their 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie. The loss marked Tottenham's fourth consecutive defeat under interim manager Igor Tudor and extended their winless run in the Premier League since 28 December.

The match at Atletico's home ground saw Spurs concede four goals within the opening 22 minutes. Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was substituted in the 17th minute after a series of errors contributed to the early deficit. This defeat adds to a troubling sequence for Tottenham, who have now lost six consecutive matches across all competitions and remain without a victory in nine games.

Van de Ven Reflects on the Match

Speaking to Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport, Van de Ven characterized the start of the game as "terrible," emphasizing the overwhelming difficulties faced by the team.

"It's actually a doomsday scenario. Everything that could go wrong went wrong.
For our goalkeeper it's terrible as well of course. You don't wish that on anyone.
For 15 minutes we just conceded goals that you really can't do anything about."

Managerial Changes and Current Standings

Igor Tudor was appointed as interim head coach in February, succeeding Thomas Frank who was dismissed after less than eight months in charge. Despite the change, Tudor has yet to reverse the team's fortunes.

Currently, Tottenham sit 16th in the Premier League, just one point above third-bottom West Ham United. The club's immediate priority is to avoid relegation from the top flight for the first time since 1977.

Upcoming Fixtures and Challenges

Tottenham will return to Premier League action on Sunday with an away match against defending champions Liverpool. This will be followed by a crucial home fixture against relegation rivals Nottingham Forest on 22 March, coming shortly after the second leg of their Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid.

Van de Ven will miss the Liverpool game due to suspension after being sent off in the 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace last Thursday.

"Right now we're just taking blow after blow after blow,"
"It's just really tough, and now we also have an important match this weekend that I won't be able to play in because I'm suspended.
It's a really terrible period, I can tell you that. It's really, really awful."

Van de Ven on Personal Impact

The 24-year-old defender shared how the club's struggles have affected him personally, revealing that he has distanced himself from social media and phone communications.

"I'm not on my phone anymore. I'm completely done with it. Just my family, so it'll be fine,"
"It's rough, really rough. I have to keep going. It's part of it, that's life and we'll see what's coming."
