Early Goalkeeper Change in Champions League Clash
Tottenham Hotspur made an early goalkeeper substitution in their Champions League last-16 match against Atletico Madrid, replacing Antonin Kinsky after just 17 minutes following a difficult start where three goals were conceded within the first 15 minutes.
The 22-year-old Czech goalkeeper faced significant challenges early on, prompting interim manager Igor Tudor to bring on Guglielmo Vicario.
Vicario's Return and Match Progress
Italian goalkeeper Vicario, who has featured in most of Tottenham's matches this season, was initially left out of the starting lineup for the Madrid fixture due to criticism over his recent performances. However, after coming on, Vicario conceded a goal five minutes later as Atletico extended their lead to 4-0 by the 22nd minute. Pedro Porro managed to reduce the deficit before halftime.
Kinsky's Transfer and Early Mistakes
Tottenham acquired Kinsky from Slavia Prague in January 2025 for approximately £12.5 million. His first mistake occurred in the sixth minute when a slip allowed Marcos Llorente to score the opening goal. Antoine Griezmann then doubled Atletico's lead in the 14th minute.
Shortly after, Kinsky was involved in the third goal conceded in the 15th minute, as he gave the ball directly to Julian Alvarez, who finished to increase Atletico's advantage.
Following these errors, Kinsky appeared visibly distressed and was substituted less than two minutes later.
