Andy Robertson to Lead Scotland at World Cup
Andy Robertson is set to captain Scotland during their first World Cup campaign since 1998.
Tottenham Sign Scotland Captain on Free Transfer
Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer following his departure from Liverpool. The 32-year-old left-back, who had previously announced his intention to leave Liverpool upon the expiration of his contract this summer, will officially join Spurs on 1 July.
Previous Transfer Attempts and Club Survival
During the January transfer window, Tottenham, then managed by Thomas Frank, identified Robertson as a target. An agreement was reached between the two clubs; however, Liverpool withdrew from the deal after being unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.
Tottenham secured their Premier League status on the final day of the season by defeating Everton under new manager Roberto de Zerbi.
Manager's Comments on Robertson's Signing
"Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team," said De Zerbi.
"He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch."
Robertson's Career Achievements
Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 and made 378 appearances for the club. During his tenure, he won two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. Additionally, he secured two League Cup victories as well as an FA Cup win. He will further add to his 92 caps for Scotland when he leads his national team at the upcoming World Cup this summer.
Tottenham Sporting Director's Statement
"His quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for - and won - major honours.
Andy's professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club."
