Tony Mowbray Returns to Blackburn Rovers as Head Coach

Blackburn Rovers have announced the appointment of Tony Mowbray as their head coach, marking his second tenure at the club.

Mowbray, aged 62, previously managed Blackburn for over five years from 2017 until 2022.

He succeeds Michael O'Neill, who opted not to accept the permanent role after serving as interim head coach during the latter half of last season.

With a managerial career spanning more than twenty years, Mowbray has also been at the helm of Sunderland, Birmingham City, and West Bromwich Albion following his initial spell at Blackburn.

Upon his initial appointment at Ewood Park in February 2017, Mowbray was unable to prevent Blackburn's relegation to League One. However, in his first full season, he secured promotion back to the Championship.

After stabilizing the club in the second tier, Mowbray chose not to renew his contract at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season, leading to Jon Dahl Tomasson taking over as head coach.

His return comes at a time when Blackburn endured a challenging 2025-26 season.

The club spent much of the campaign near the relegation zone, resulting in the dismissal of Valerien Ismael in February. Subsequently, Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill was appointed.

O'Neill successfully kept Blackburn in the Championship, with the team finishing 20th, five points clear of relegation.
