St Johnstone Poised to Clinch Scottish Championship Title on BBC Scotland

St Johnstone are on the verge of clinching the Scottish Championship title against Dunfermline, maintaining dominance since August. Manager Simo Valakari's leadership and key players like Josh McPake have propelled the team toward promotion after relegation last season.

St Johnstone Near Title Victory Against Dunfermline

Simo Valakari's team is set to secure the Scottish Championship title in their upcoming match against Neil Lennon's Dunfermline Athletic.

St Johnstone have demonstrated remarkable dominance throughout the season, maintaining the top position in the second tier since their commanding 5-1 victory over Partick Thistle on 2 August.

Interestingly, Partick Thistle have been their primary challengers since that opening match, remaining the closest competitors in the league.

Following Thistle's recent late equaliser against relegation-threatened Airdrieonians, St Johnstone now hold a two-point lead, positioning them to achieve promotion back to the Premiership just one year after relegation.

This potential title-clinching moment could be broadcast live on the BBC Scotland TV channel on Tuesday, as St Johnstone visit Dunfermline in a fixture postponed from Saturday due to Dunfermline's involvement in the Scottish Cup semi-finals.

If St Johnstone secure the title in this match, it would mark the third last game of the season as the official start of their celebrations.

From Relegation to 'UK's Best-Loved Manager'

After retaining a core of their Premiership-level squad post-relegation, St Johnstone and Ross County were considered strong favourites to win the Championship and return immediately to the top flight.

However, Ross County's struggles this season have demonstrated that promotion was not guaranteed.

While St Johnstone have steadily advanced towards the title, Ross County have been near the bottom of the table, currently one point behind Airdrieonians with only two games remaining.

Despite managerial changes, including the dismissal of Don Cowie and Tony Docherty and the reappointment of Stuart Kettlewell, Ross County face the risk of consecutive relegations, similar to Hamilton Academical's fate last season.

In contrast, St Johnstone appear to have benefited from their commitment to manager Simo Valakari.

Valakari, a former midfielder for Motherwell, Derby County, and Finland, was appointed last season after Craig Levein's dismissal when the club was 10th out of 12 after five games.

Despite his pledge to "create something special," St Johnstone finished last, five points behind Ross County and four behind Dundee.

Valakari's approach, focusing on "exciting football" played from the back to engage fans, was aesthetically pleasing but initially did not yield strong results.

Nevertheless, American owner Adam Webb maintained his support for Valakari, as he had done in January 2025 when announcing his recovery from cancer shortly after acquiring the club.

"We are looking to the long term and will not break the bank to avoid relegation," Webb said, emphasizing the club's sustainability.

By November, now competing in the Championship, Webb indicated the club had "weathered the storm" of relegation without requiring additional funds.

Saints supporters appeared confident in Valakari's leadership, and by January, Webb described the meditation-practicing Finn as the "UK's most beloved coach," a sentiment reflected when the club honored him with a dedicated beer.

Close but No Cigar for Thistle?

After transferring promising players Makenzie Kirk to Portsmouth and Benjamin Kimpioka to Sivasspor, and releasing veteran players, St Johnstone recruited several experienced Championship players from rivals last summer.

This strategy proved effective as they won their first four League Cup group matches and the initial seven league games.

Subsequent goalless draws against Ayr United and Ross County, plus a defeat to Arbroath, allowed Thistle to narrow the gap to three points with a game in hand by October.

When Thistle defeated St Johnstone 2-1 at Firhill in November, and St Johnstone lost 2-1 at home to third-tier Cove Rangers in the Scottish Cup, the leaders appeared vulnerable.

By December, Thistle were only behind on goal difference and missed an opportunity to top the table after a goalless draw with Ayr United coincided with St Johnstone's 0-0 draw against Raith Rovers; since then, Thistle have not come as close.

At times, St Johnstone have led by as many as eight points, and although Thistle traveled to McDiarmid Park within striking distance in January, a 2-2 draw preserved St Johnstone's two-point lead.

Thistle were unable to capitalize further in February when St Johnstone drew with Raith Rovers and Queen's Park.

Josh McPake has been a key player, scoring 17 of his 19 goals by February, earning a summer transfer to Heart of Midlothian.

The January signings of forwards Josh Fowler, Alfredo Agyeman, and Ruari Paton also contributed significantly to maintaining momentum and improving goal difference.

St Johnstone have six players named in the PFA Scotland Championship Team of the Year, double the number of Thistle.

Title-winning medals seem likely, whether secured at East End Park on Tuesday or before the season concludes.

How Will Dunfermline React to Cup Glory?

Mark Wilson's Thistle have maintained a strong pursuit throughout the season, remaining unbeaten in their last seven games and 12 league matches, but they conceded a 90th-minute equalizer to Airdrieonians on Saturday after leading 2-1.

This result has shifted momentum back to St Johnstone, who hold a four-point lead and are themselves unbeaten in nine matches, with 11 league games without defeat.

St Johnstone's last league loss was a 1-0 defeat at Dunfermline in January.

Neil Lennon's Dunfermline secured their place in the Scottish Cup final after a penalty shootout victory over Falkirk, a physically and emotionally demanding match.

The impact of this cup success on their performance in Tuesday's league match remains to be seen.

Dunfermline are expected to receive strong support from their home fans as they aim to improve their promotion play-off position, having slipped to third place after Arbroath extended their lead by defeating Raith Rovers.

Additional seating has been arranged to accommodate the anticipated traveling supporters.

Matches between St Johnstone and Dunfermline have been closely contested this season, with St Johnstone winning 2-1 at home in September and a 2-2 draw at East End Park in November.

Lennon's team have lost only once in their last 11 matches, a defeat away to Thistle when squad rotation was employed ahead of the semi-final.

St Johnstone remain in strong form as they seek to secure promotion back to the Premiership at the first attempt.
