Visa Issues Delay South Africa's World Cup Travel

South Africa's sports minister has called for an explanation after reports emerged that the national football team experienced delays in traveling to Mexico ahead of the World Cup due to visa complications.

According to the national broadcaster SABC, an "administrative bungle" resulted in some players not receiving visas, though no further details were provided.

Minister Demands Accountability

In response to the situation, sports minister Gayton McKenzie stated that he had instructed the South African Football Association (Safa) to provide a report and to take action against those responsible for the mishandling.

"I need a report and action must be taken against those responsible for this mess," McKenzie said.
"We are being made to look like fools," he added on X.

As of now, Safa has not issued any comments regarding the matter.

Upcoming Matches and Travel Requirements

The team, known as Bafana Bafana, is scheduled to play a friendly match against Jamaica in Mexico on Friday.

Following that, they will participate in the World Cup opening match against Mexico on 11 June. Mexico is co-hosting the tournament alongside the United States and Canada.

McKenzie further expressed his frustration on X, stating:

"This Safa travel & visa debacle is embarrassing & grossly unfair towards the players & coaching staff."

South African news outlet TimesLive reported that efforts were underway to secure US visas for the team, enabling them to travel either later on Sunday or Monday.

Obtaining permission to enter the United States is necessary for the squad and staff as they are set to play their second World Cup game against the Czech Republic in Atlanta.

Context and Recent Performance

South Africa is among the 10 African nations participating in the expanded 48-team World Cup.

The friendly against Jamaica represents Bafana Bafana's final opportunity to prepare for the tournament, which they last competed in when South Africa hosted the finals in 2010.

Their most recent home match on Friday ended in a 0-0 draw against Nicaragua. The game included a missed penalty by South Africa and was described by some reports as "disappointing," extending their winless streak to four games.
