Real Madrid Completes Signing of Marc Cucurella
Real Madrid have confirmed the acquisition of Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella for a fee of £51.8 million, signing the 27-year-old on a six-year contract.
Cucurella is currently representing Spain at the World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The transfer agreement, valued at £47.5 million plus an additional £4.3 million in potential add-ons, was finalized on Sunday ahead of the official announcement on Monday.
Real Madrid's Transfer Strategy
Following the re-election of club president Florentino Perez and the appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager, Real Madrid are reportedly pursuing further signings. Targets include Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries. Additionally, France defender Ibrahima Konate is anticipated to join after departing Liverpool.
Cucurella's Background and Chelsea Tenure
Cucurella joined Chelsea in 2022 from Brighton for £63 million. The Spanish international, who developed through Barcelona's academy, was reportedly eager to return to Spain. Prior to the move, he had been linked with Atletico Madrid and a potential return to Barcelona.
During the March international break, Cucurella publicly expressed dissatisfaction with Chelsea's management following the mid-season departure of manager Enzo Maresca.
"He was part of a core group of Spanish-speaking players who were frustrated by the situation and struggled to perform under Maresca's successor, Liam Rosenior."
Despite having three years remaining on his contract and agreeing to improved terms without an extension last season, Cucurella's desire to leave likely influenced Chelsea's decision to accept the offer.
Chelsea's Recent Managerial Changes
Rosenior was eventually dismissed after Chelsea finished 10th in the league, failing to qualify for European competitions. This occurred despite the temporary appointment of Calum McFarlane as caretaker manager.
For the 2026-27 season, former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has been appointed as Chelsea's permanent manager.
