McKenna Highlights Positive Impact of New Manager
Northern Ireland captain Rebecca McKenna has expressed optimism about the future under new manager Michael McArdle, describing his arrival as "a breath of fresh air." McArdle was appointed in April and has achieved two wins in his first three games in charge.
Despite Northern Ireland's recent defeat by Turkey in Istanbul, which means they will finish third in Group B2, the team has secured a play-off spot for the World Cup scheduled for the autumn.
"We're still getting to know him and he's still getting to know us but, since he's come in, it's been a breath of fresh air," McKenna told NI.
"He's really bought into it and everyone here has also bought into it. It's exciting for the future.
"I think going forward, we all want to be at a major tournament. It is exciting and we've just got to put the work in. Hopefully, one day we'll get to experience that again."
Building on Euro 2022 Experience
McKenna, who was part of the Birmingham City squad that recently secured promotion to the Women's Super League (WSL), is among six players who participated in Northern Ireland's historic Euro 2022 campaign. Four years on, she is eager for the team to continue progressing and to make further history.
"When we qualified for the Euros, it was a great feeling," McKenna said.
"You get a feeling of being at one major tournament. It gives you that feeling to get there again.
"Everyone's just got to put in the work and I know everyone will. Hopefully, one day we'll get the rewards."
