Newport County to Host Italian Giants Roma

Newport County are finalising arrangements to host Italian Serie A club Roma in a prestigious pre-season friendly at Rodney Parade.

The match is expected to take place on Tuesday, 4 August, serving as a prominent warm-up fixture ahead of Newport's 2026-27 League Two campaign, which begins later that month.

Reports indicate that Cardiff City may also host Roma, potentially on the first weekend of August, prior to their Championship season. This scheduling would be convenient for Cardiff, as they currently have no warm-up matches planned for the opening week of August.

Roma have confirmed on their official website that they will be conducting an eight-day training camp in Wales at the Hensol resort in the Vale of Glamorgan, the same facility used by Cardiff City. The Italian club stated that their players would spend just over a week at Hensol, participating in three friendly matches during their stay before returning to Rome on 8 August.

Significance for Newport County

Securing a home friendly against Roma represents a significant opportunity for Newport County, who are preparing for another season in League Two after narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day of the 2025-26 season.

In contrast, Roma are gearing up for their return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time in eight years, having finished third in Serie A last season.

The new English Football League season is scheduled to commence between 14 and 16 August, with the official fixtures set to be released on 25 June.
