Harvey Barnes Replaces Eberechi Eze in England Squad
Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes has been called up to the England squad by manager Thomas Tuchel, stepping in for Arsenal midfielder Eberechi Eze, who is sidelined due to injury.
Eze was absent from Arsenal's lineup during their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday because of a lower leg injury.
Barnes, who previously received an England call-up in October 2020, earned his only cap in a friendly match against Wales at that time.
Despite interest from Scotland, which sought to persuade Barnes to switch his international allegiance and represent Steve Clarke's team at the recent World Cup, the 28-year-old declined. Barnes is eligible to play for Scotland through his grandparents.
Now, Barnes has been selected for England's upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. These matches will provide opportunities for several fringe players to compete for a regular spot in the national team.
The Three Lions are scheduled to face Uruguay on 27 March and Japan on 31 March, with both fixtures taking place at Wembley Stadium.
This season, Barnes has scored 14 goals across all competitions for Newcastle.
Alexander-Arnold was not included in the 35-man split England squad.
