Match Halted Due to Alleged Discriminatory Abuse

Newcastle United hosted Sunderland at St James' Park for their first encounter since 2016. Early in the second half, the Premier League fixture was paused following reports of discriminatory abuse directed at Sunderland player Lutsharel Geertruida.

Referee Anthony Taylor temporarily stopped the game for three minutes in accordance with the Premier League's on-field anti-discrimination protocol.

In the 52nd minute, with play already suspended as Newcastle's Sven Botman received treatment, Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka approached the referee. Shortly thereafter, Taylor conferred with the coaching staff of both teams, as well as with Geertruida and Xhaka, before resuming the match.

The Premier League has confirmed that the incident will be thoroughly investigated.

Reactions from Managers

Sunderland manager Regis le Bris commented on Geertruida's condition and the situation:

"He [Lutsharel Geertruida] looks OK. It is unacceptable and important to report and manage the situation properly. He looks OK, but we need to support him."

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe also addressed the issue, stating:

"We don't condone racism in any form and the club will investigate."

Context and Match Outcome

This incident follows a similar situation in August during the Premier League season opener between Liverpool and Bournemouth, which was halted after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported racial abuse from the crowd at Anfield.

At the time of the stoppage, Newcastle were leading Sunderland 1-0. However, Sunderland ultimately secured a 2-1 victory thanks to a late goal by Brian Brobbey.

Police Response and Pre-Match Incident

Northumbria Police reported making one arrest prior to the match following reports of isolated fighting among supporters.

They stated:

"We are aware of a number of videos circulating on social media in relation to Newcastle United and Sunderland supporters goading one another. In the main, everyone has co-operated and we are able to report that one arrest was made ahead of kick-off."
