MP Appeals to FIFA Over England Player Suspension

Noah Law, a Member of Parliament, has addressed a letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, urging the suspension of England defender Jarrell Quansah to be deferred until the conclusion of the World Cup. This request follows Quansah receiving a one-match ban after a red card during England's 3-2 win against Mexico on Monday.

The appeal comes in the wake of a controversial decision by FIFA to lift the one-match suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun after intervention from US President Donald Trump, a move that has attracted widespread criticism.

Law acknowledged the correctness of Quansah's red card but argued that

"it would be right to delay his suspension until after the completion of this World Cup"
and emphasized that the rules must be
"applied equally"
to all nations participating in the tournament.

Balogun was the 12th player to receive a red card at the 2026 World Cup and notably the first to avoid serving a suspension following FIFA's unexpected decision.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) condemned the decision, describing it as

"unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable"
, while the Royal Belgian Football Association expressed that it was
"astonished"
and announced it was
"investigating all potential options"
.

Details of the MP's Letter to FIFA

In his letter, Law, who represents St Austell and Newquay in Cornwall as a Labour MP, wrote:

"We know that a similar situation arose earlier in the competition when United States forward Folarin Balogun received a red card during the Round of 32.
The integrity of any major international tournament depends not only on players and officials adhering to the rules, but also on those rules being applied equally to all participating nations.
I am sure we will be unable to justify a situation in which one player benefits from a delayed suspension while another, in materially similar circumstances, does not."

He further stated:

"At a time when our multilateral system and the international rules-based order is under threat, I urge you to treat this matter with the utmost seriousness."
