Olise's Hat-Trick Highlights France's World Cup Warm-Up

Michael Olise scored his first international hat-trick against Northern Ireland on Monday, marking a standout performance in France's final World Cup warm-up match.

Last season, France's attacking line featured four of the game's top forwards, collectively scoring over 100 goals for club and country. While Kylian Mbappe narrowly missed equaling Olivier Giroud's France goalscoring record, and Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue were relatively subdued despite Dembele's recent Champions League success with PSG, it was Olise who captured attention.

The Bayern Munich winger delivered a commanding display in Boston, Massachusetts, netting three goals to secure a victorious send-off for France. His opening goal came with a bit of fortune, capitalizing on a deflected shot from Dembele. Olise's second was a powerful strike, followed by a third goal featuring a skillful curling finish.

Expert Perspectives on Olise's Potential

Before the match, Gael Clichy, who coached Olise during the Paris Olympics, expressed in his column that Olise has the potential to be a breakthrough star at the World Cup.

Former France striker Louis Saha praised Olise's performance as meeting expectations for a player of his caliber and emphasized the importance of consistency for Ballon d'Or contention.

"Consistency is the hardest and from his point of view, you have to be in that conversation every time you want a Ballon d'Or," said NI pundit Saha.
"That is what he wants and that is why those performances are the norm for [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo. I think that is what he is dreaming of and that is what we want in the World Cup."

Regarding Olise's potential to enter the Ballon d'Or conversation, Saha highlighted the winger's strong mentality developed during his three years at Crystal Palace before transferring to Bayern Munich in 2024.

"It is unbelievable in this [France] squad to have three possible Ballon d'Or winners," Saha added, referring to Mbappe and last year's winner Dembele alongside Olise.

Manager Didier Deschamps on Olise's Growth

France's manager Didier Deschamps, who is set to conclude his 14-year tenure after the World Cup, praised Olise's development since his debut in 2024 and his impressive showing at the Paris Olympics.

"Michael is amazing. You can see it, he's really confident right now," Deschamps said.
"He's decisive and clinical. For an offensive player, he's making the efforts to defend as well. We'll definitely need Michael at this level, and also other players too, of course."

Deschamps acknowledged that Olise took time to adapt to the international stage, not scoring in his first five appearances. However, Monday's hat-trick brought his tally to seven goals in 12 games.

France's squad boasts a wealth of attacking talent beyond the four starters in Lille, including Bradley Barcola, Rayan Cherki, and Warren Zaire-Emery among the 26-man roster. Deschamps emphasized Olise's importance to France's ambitions of securing a third World Cup title.

"It took some time for him to feel relaxed. His temperament is really more of an introvert player," Deschamps said.
"It's our job also to move along with him, to help him integrate. We'll need him to play at his best level."

Deschamps Focused on World Cup Ahead

Deschamps, a World Cup winner both as a captain and manager, refrained from dwelling on the emotions of his final home match. His focus remains on France's World Cup opener against Senegal on 16 June in New Jersey, followed by group matches against Iraq and Norway, led by Erling Haaland.

Prior to the game, a ceremony honored Deschamps, with the home crowd singing his name multiple times. After the match, several members of France's 2018 World Cup-winning team, including Giroud and Raphael Varane, joined the pitch for a lap of honor.

"There have been many testimonies and messages, and it's really nice to hear so much love, to see so much love," Deschamps reflected.
"This is part of life. I'm not nostalgic. Just like the first day, each, every minute, I've been trying to enjoy as much as I can."

Mbappe's Frustrating Night

While Olise excelled, Kylian Mbappe experienced a challenging evening as he continued his pursuit of Olivier Giroud's record of 57 goals for France.

Despite scoring 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid at club level, Mbappe has managed only one goal in his last four international matches. On Monday, a goal was disallowed due to an offside in the build-up involving Doue, and Mbappe missed several opportunities as Olise dominated the headlines.

When questioned by a French reporter about concerns over Mbappe's international form ahead of the World Cup, Deschamps responded firmly.

"You do what you want, but I'm not going to worry," he said.
"It's true that he's had a few occasions, a few opportunities.
He hasn't been efficient, but he has said he is keeping that efficiency for the USA, so that's fine."
