McConville Aims to Impress in Upcoming Friendlies
Northern Ireland defender Ruairi McConville, who plays his club football at Norwich, has expressed that the upcoming friendlies against Guinea and France present an opportunity to impress manager Michael O'Neill and demonstrate his abilities.
O'Neill recently committed to a new contract extending his tenure as Northern Ireland manager until 2032. This decision came after he declined a full-time managerial role at Blackburn Rovers, a position he temporarily held at the end of last season while also managing Northern Ireland.
With his full attention now on the Northern Ireland team, O'Neill aims to develop his young squad and build momentum ahead of the Nations League campaign starting in September.
Throughout both of his managerial spells with Northern Ireland, O'Neill has prioritized giving younger players opportunities, including McConville, who made his senior debut in 2024.
"The priority for me, it's just trying to play again and try and keep my place in this team," McConville told NI.
"It's another opportunity to impress Michael and show him what you can do and hopefully keep my spot going into the big game on Monday [against France].
"I think missing a few boys at the back, it's maybe a different feeling about it this time. Again, I'm still just trying to learn as much as I can off the boys here and obviously help the younger ones coming in."
Squad Changes and Opportunities for Young Players
Nine players from the World Cup play-off squad that lost to Italy are unavailable for this international window. Consequently, O'Neill has included uncapped players Braiden Graham, Caedach O'Neill, and Kieran Morrison in the squad.
McConville views the friendlies as a valuable chance for these younger players to establish themselves within the senior team.
"We are a tight-knit group where you don't feel out of place to anyone, so we'll take that as an advantage," he said.
"I think we're a good group and we're still obviously quite young so the boys can fit in well.
"It's a good opportunity for them. I think they'll hopefully get a run out in the games and show what they can do. They've already done that in training so far."
