Mayo Hold On to Win After Monaghan's Late Rally at Clones
Mayo narrowly maintained their lead to claim a 1-24 to 2-20 victory over Monaghan in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship first-round match held at Clones. Despite a strong late surge from Monaghan, sparked by a goal from Stephen Mooney following a two-pointer by Jack McCarron, the Farney side could not overcome Mayo's 11-point advantage established by Kobe McDonald's goal at halftime.
Monaghan entered the game two weeks after their Ulster final loss to Armagh, with manager Gabriel Bannigan making three alterations to the lineup. A significant setback for Monaghan was the absence of Stephen O'Hanlon, who had scored five points in the Ulster final, ruled out entirely and replaced by Ryan McAnespie in the starting fifteen.
Mayo returned to championship action after nearly five weeks, following their Connacht semi-final defeat to eventual champions Roscommon. In response, manager Andy Moran implemented six changes, including three senior inter-county debuts: Jack Livingstone as goalkeeper, Diarmuid Duffy in defense, and Darragh Beirne in the forward line.
Aidan O'Shea also marked a milestone, making his 100th championship appearance and becoming the first outfield player to reach this landmark.
Two-Point Specialists Mayo
Mayo demonstrated their accuracy with six two-point scores in the first half, beginning with Jack Carney's opening effort on goal. The visitors quickly established a 4-0 lead, with Monaghan's Andrew Woods having a goal chance saved by debutant goalkeeper Livingstone.
Monaghan struggled to make an impact in their initial five attacks until Jack McCarron's close-range free in the 11th minute put them on the scoreboard. Mayo responded with three consecutive two-pointers from Carney, Ryan O'Donoghue, and Kobe McDonald, extending their lead to 0-11 to 0-3 after 22 minutes.
The Ulster finalists attempted to respond with scores from Aaron Carey and Oisin McGorman, but McDonald capitalized on a well-executed setup by under-20 teammate Darragh Beirne, punching the ball into an empty net. Both teams exchanged scores before a flurry of two-point efforts before halftime, including a vital two-pointer from Andrew Woods for Monaghan and efforts from Beirne and O'Donoghue from beyond the arc, culminating in a 1-17 to 0-9 lead for Mayo at the break.

Monaghan Fightback Falls Short
Monaghan sought another comeback early in the second half, recalling their recovery from 11 points down to defeat Derry in the Ulster semi-final. Substitute Bobby McCaul troubled Mayo's defense after entering at halftime, twice denied goals by Livingstone and the crossbar, respectively. However, McCaul eventually scored after Dessie Ward's two-pointer, rising above Enda Hession to convert a pass from Stephen Mooney.
Conor McCarthy added to Monaghan's tally, reducing the deficit to six points with just over ten minutes remaining. The Farney side's momentum was disrupted when McCaul sustained an injury, leaving the field on a stretcher.
Mayo's Darragh Beirne and Paddy Durcan extended the lead to seven points, but Monaghan set up a thrilling finish. Jack McCarron scored from two-point range, and Rory Beggan won a Mayo kick-out to assist Mooney's well-taken goal, narrowing the gap to two points with four minutes left.
Ryan O'Donoghue added a late free to secure the win for Mayo, while Max Maguire's late two-pointer served as consolation for Monaghan. With this result, Mayo have two opportunities remaining to reach the last eight, whereas Monaghan proceed to Round 2B without the safety net.
