Marc Cucurella Joins Real Madrid, Enzo Fernandez Transfer Speculated
Marc Cucurella has officially signed with Real Madrid just hours before his opening World Cup match with Spain, prompting speculation about whether his former Chelsea teammate Enzo Fernandez will also make the move.
The 27-year-old defender's transfer, valued at up to £51.8 million, was agreed on Sunday evening and announced promptly on Monday morning.
Sources in Spain report that negotiations with Chelsea advanced quickly, and a similar situation may arise regarding Fernandez.
The possibility of Fernandez joining Madrid largely depends on the club's readiness to pay a substantial fee for the midfielder, whom Chelsea values at £120 million.
It remains uncertain how much Chelsea is willing to negotiate or whether Madrid will meet that valuation for the Argentina international, who is also participating in the FIFA World Cup.
However, re-elected Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has hinted at a potential signing worth 150 million euros (£129.6 million), following a rejected bid at that value for Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez, Fernandez's international teammate. This suggests those funds could be allocated for Fernandez.
Well-informed sources indicate Fernandez is eager to leave Chelsea and join Real Madrid. Although Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with interest, both clubs are reportedly no longer pursuing him.
It appears that Fernandez's options are limited to Madrid or remaining at Chelsea. Under new manager Xabi Alonso, Chelsea would be content to retain the midfielder, who contributed 15 goals and seven assists last season and is contracted until 2032.
Real Madrid Confirm £51.8m Deal for Cucurella; Maresca Talks Continue
While Real Madrid have announced the acquisition of Cucurella, Manchester City and Chelsea continue discussions regarding Maresca.
Why Has Cucurella Left Chelsea?
Cucurella's departure from Chelsea is notable. Last season, the Spain international agreed to improved financial terms without extending his contract, a deal never formally announced by the club.
After winning the European Championship with Spain, as well as the Conference League and Club World Cup with Chelsea, Cucurella seemed to be a key player under former manager Enzo Maresca.
However, his performance declined under Maresca's mid-season replacement, Liam Rosenior. Amid a series of poor results, Cucurella criticized the managerial instability and broader club management.
Unlike Fernandez, who made similar remarks in March, Cucurella was not formally disciplined.
Despite recently stating that he had spoken with incoming coach Xabi Alonso and was attracted to the prospect of playing under him, Cucurella chose to transfer to Real Madrid.
"Yes, I'm attracted to Xabi Alonso's project. I've spoken with him and he inspired a lot of confidence in me. I've also spoken with Grimaldo and Borja, who have worked with him, and they spoke very highly of him. The project seems very interesting."
For Chelsea, the transfer is financially prudent. The club finished 10th in the Premier League last season, will lose significant revenue by missing European competition, currently lacks a long-term front-of-shirt sponsor, and remains under UEFA scrutiny following a settlement agreement due to breaching squad cost regulations.
Although Chelsea insist they do not need to sell players and will remain compliant, selling Cucurella improves their financial position. While it represents a small loss on the £60 million paid to acquire him from Brighton in 2022, due to transfer fees being amortized over the contract length, it equates to an accounting profit of approximately £17.5 million.
Additionally, Chelsea will have fewer matches next season. With Cucurella turning 28 next month and three years remaining on his contract, this may have been the final opportunity to maximize his transfer fee given his desire to move.
Cucurella was among Chelsea's most consistent performers over the past two seasons, and his departure will reduce the average age of a squad already the youngest in the Premier League.
There is also the emergence of Dutch defender Jorrel Hato, signed from Ajax last summer, who was one of the few positives in the final months of the season under Rosenior and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane.

It will be interesting to observe whether Chelsea re-enter the market for a left-back, having already targeted centre-backs, central midfielders, and a versatile attacker.
Although Chelsea have not formally confirmed a deal, they are expected to sign Argentine Valentin Barco from partner club Strasbourg this summer. Primarily a midfielder, Barco has played left-back for his former clubs Brighton and Boca Juniors.
There is broader uncertainty among Chelsea's defenders, as the club already struggles to provide sufficient playing time for all options. Without European competition, some players may become frustrated with limited opportunities, although Josh Acheampong is reportedly not for sale.
Madrid Signs Players with 'Winning Mentality'
Real Madrid is set to sign Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries, and Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva.
These acquisitions are part of a rebuild under returning manager Jose Mourinho after a season in which Madrid finished second to Barcelona in La Liga and exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.
Regarding Cucurella's move, former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot told BBC Radio 5 Live:
"For Jose Mourinho, that's the type of player he wants. Jose wants a player he can count on. His mentality has to be right and he has to have the spirit and winning mentality. For Real to go after him is not a big surprise because Cucurella is the kind of player who fits Mourinho's criteria and how he wants to play.
"Away from that, Chelsea have probably looked at it and thought: 'We've got Hato.' He's younger, very talented and well developed, and he has proven himself - especially in the final games of the season - that he can step up in that position.
"When Real Madrid come knocking, you are always going to listen. He would have looked at both sides - one club is not in the Champions League and the other is - so that may have influenced his decision."
