Schmeichel Announces Retirement

Kasper Schmeichel has confirmed his retirement from professional football at the age of 39, following an inability to fully recover from a severe shoulder injury. The goalkeeper, who played for Celtic and the Denmark national team, has been sidelined since February while consulting with medical specialists.

"I believe that now is the right time," Schmeichel told TV2.

Injury Details and Career Impact

Schmeichel sustained the injury during a UEFA Nations League quarter-final match against Portugal in March 2025. Despite the injury, he continued playing as Denmark had exhausted all substitutions. The son of former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel later aggravated the injury in Celtic's Europa League loss to Stuttgart 11 months afterward.

Facing the prospect of an extensive rehabilitation period of up to a year and with his contract nearing its end, Schmeichel had initially committed to doing everything possible to extend his playing career. However, he acknowledged that the decision to retire was ultimately out of his hands.

"This is a decision that has been made for me. I didn't realise how bad it was back in March. It's been a long process. When I landed on it in February, I could tell straight away that something was seriously wrong.

I have consulted with various surgeons and experts regarding my shoulder, and they have told me that I should not expect to return to playing top-flight football."

Career Highlights

Schmeichel began his professional career at Manchester City and earned 120 caps for Denmark. He represented his country at the FIFA World Cups in 2018 and 2022 and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championship in 2020.

During his two seasons at Celtic, Schmeichel made 39 appearances this season and secured his second Scottish Premiership title. Prior to joining Celtic, he spent a decade at Leicester City, where he won the Premier League in the 2015-16 season and the FA Cup in 2021. His career also included spells at Nice and Anderlecht before moving to Scotland.

"I think everyone dreams of saying goodbye on the field, but you don't always get what you want," Schmeichel reflected.

"I've had so much else along the way, so football doesn't owe me anything. I've had so many opportunities, so many experiences.

What stands out most is the friendships and connections I've made. The moments I've shared with them - for better or worse."
