Controversial Penalty Secures Ipswich's 2-0 Victory at Norwich

Ipswich Town significantly advanced their automatic promotion ambitions by securing a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road. Meanwhile, Coventry City were forced to wait for promotion confirmation after a goalless draw at home against Sheffield Wednesday.

With this result, Ipswich moved into the second position in the Championship standings, holding at least one game in hand over their closest competitors. The first-half goals came from Jaden Philogene, who converted a penalty awarded under contentious circumstances, and George Hirst, who added a second goal to complete a long-awaited double over their East Anglian rivals.

Norwich dominated possession but were repeatedly thwarted by Ipswich's resolute defensive performance, which limited the number of clear scoring opportunities. This defeat effectively ended Norwich's slim hopes of reaching the playoffs, although their projected top 10 finish remains a commendable achievement for a team that was positioned in the bottom three at the start of the year.

The opening goal for Ipswich arrived after just 11 minutes under controversial conditions. Anis Ben Slimane inadvertently struck Jack Taylor while attempting to clear the ball in the penalty area, leading referee Anthony Backhouse to award a penalty. Philogene successfully converted the spot-kick, sending Norwich goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic the wrong way.

Shortly before halftime, Ipswich doubled their advantage. A long throw from Darnell Furlong on the left flank was flicked on, allowing an unmarked George Hirst to volley the ball home, giving Ipswich a two-goal lead that some might consider flattering.

This victory marked Ipswich's first win at Carrow Road since 2006 and completed a derby double over Norwich for the first time since the 1992-93 season.

Millwall Held to Draw by West Brom, Coventry Miss Promotion Opportunity

Millwall, who had risen to second place overnight, suffered a setback in their automatic promotion pursuit after being held to a 0-0 draw by West Bromwich Albion at home. Despite creating the better chances, Millwall were unable to convert, with Josh Coburn volleying wide from five yards and Mihailo Ivanovic hitting the crossbar from long range.

Coventry City missed the chance to move within one point of Premier League promotion after being held to a goalless draw by already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday. Frank Lampard’s side could have secured promotion with a victory over the struggling Owls, provided Middlesbrough failed to beat Portsmouth later in the day.

Sheffield Wednesday earned only their third point of 2026, extending their Football League record-breaking winless streak to 37 games across all competitions.

QPR and Bristol City Maintain Unbeaten Runs in Goalless Draw

In Saturday’s early fixture, Queens Park Rangers and Bristol City continued their recent unbeaten runs by playing out a 0-0 draw at Loftus Road. Bristol City have not lost since Roy Hodgson assumed interim charge, winning both of their first two matches under his management. Meanwhile, QPR remain unbeaten in their last five matches. Despite these positive runs, the result did little to enhance either side’s slim playoff aspirations.

Upcoming Matches with Crucial Implications

Later on Saturday, Middlesbrough will host Portsmouth in a match with significant consequences for both teams. Additionally, Oxford United face a critical home fixture against Watford, and Leicester City will look to secure vital points when Swansea City visit.
