Hull City and Middlesbrough Aim for Premier League Promotion in First English Season

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic and Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg are both seeking to conclude their inaugural seasons in English football by securing promotion to the Premier League.

In the 40-year history of the Championship play-offs, the pre-match discussions ahead of the final have never been so dominated by a team not participating in the match itself.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Southampton had been expelled from the Championship play-offs due to spying on opponents. Consequently, Middlesbrough, who Southampton had defeated in the semi-finals, replaced them in the final against Hull City.

Southampton appealed the decision, but their appeal was unsuccessful. An independent commission determined that Southampton manager Tonda Eckert had "specifically authorised the observations".

Further repercussions are expected in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, either Hull City or Middlesbrough will celebrate promotion to the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Surprise Package Hull City Considered 'Collateral Damage'

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic expressed his frustration regarding the impact of the Southampton controversy on his team.

"We can say everything is unfair in this last two weeks. You don't know what's going on," he told BBC Radio Humberside.
"We are collateral damage because we are waiting on [an] opponent and you don't know what's going on, what's happening."

The Tigers secured their place in the play-off final last Monday by defeating third-placed Millwall.

Hull City have been the surprise team in the division this season. The East Yorkshire club narrowly avoided relegation to League One on goal difference last May before appointing former Bosnia international Jakirovic as their new manager.

Shortly after, the club was hit with a transfer embargo spanning three windows, which was later reduced to two following a successful appeal. Few predicted Hull would be promotion contenders.

Despite this, Hull defied expectations and spent most of the season within the top six.

They remained in automatic promotion contention until the end of March, but a six-game winless run in April dropped them to seventh place going into the final day.

A victory over Norwich City at home, combined with Middlesbrough's draw at Wrexham, allowed Hull to climb back into the play-off positions at a crucial time. They then overcame Millwall, who had finished three places and 10 points above them, to reach Wembley.

Hull City, aiming for their third Championship play-off final victory, will be without forward Kyle Joseph due to an injury sustained in the win against Millwall.

Southampton Lose Appeal Against Play-Off Expulsion

The Football Association has launched an investigation into Southampton following the spying scandal, which led to the expulsion of the club from the Championship play-offs. Manager Tonda Eckert was found to have authorised the spying activities.

Middlesbrough Seek to Capitalize on Final Reprieve

Middlesbrough's journey to Wembley caps a dramatic and eventful season.

Last summer, the club appointed Rob Edwards as manager, who initially achieved positive results both on and off the pitch. However, after just three months, Edwards left to join Premier League side Wolves, where he had previously played for four years, much to the disappointment of Boro supporters.

Swedish coach Kim Hellberg, formerly a teacher and relatively unknown in English football, took over and led Middlesbrough to the top of the Championship by February, achieving six consecutive wins with attractive football.

Despite holding a position in the top two for 35 of the 46 league matchdays, Middlesbrough's form declined towards the end of the season, compounded by the loss of key players, resulting in a fifth-place finish.

This set up a play-off semi-final against Southampton, who had been unbeaten in the league since a 2-1 home defeat to Hull on 17 January.

Their preparations were disrupted when a member of Southampton's backroom staff was discovered at Middlesbrough's training ground two days before the first leg, sparking the 'Spygate' scandal.

Just over two weeks later, having lost 2-1 on aggregate to Southampton in the semi-finals before being reinstated, Middlesbrough now stand one match away from returning to the Premier League after a nine-year absence.

Influential captain Hayden Hackney is set to return after missing 10 games with a groin injury, while Scotland forward Tommy Conway has been ruled out of the final and the World Cup due to an ankle injury.
