Rangers Draw with Olympiakos in Europa League
Rangers secured a draw against Olympiakos in Greece during the 2024 Europa League campaign.
Scottish clubs have faced challenges in European competitions over recent seasons, but recent developments in Greece may offer a potential advantage for one of the Scottish Premiership title contenders.
Due to a decline in Scotland's UEFA coefficient, both Celtic and Rangers, despite finishing as champions and runners-up respectively, had to enter the Champions League through qualifying rounds this season, ultimately failing to reach the group stage and dropping into the Europa League.
The same scenario is set for the next season, with Heart of Midlothian, Rangers, and Celtic competing for the title and the available Champions League qualifying spot.
If Hearts, who trailed Rangers by just one point after recent matches, or third-placed Celtic win the league, they will be among four domestic champions entering the Champions League at the play-off round.
However, if Rangers claim their first Scottish Premiership title since 2021, Danny Rohl's team could bypass the qualifiers and enter the Champions League group stage directly, thanks to the performance of Olympiakos or more specifically, AEK Athens.
Understanding UEFA's Title-Holder Rebalancing
Since 2024, UEFA has implemented a system called "title-holder rebalancing," which uses club coefficients over the previous five years to determine Champions League entry.
According to this system, if the Champions League winner has also qualified for the group stage via their domestic league, the domestic champion with the highest individual coefficient among those in qualifying rounds advances directly to the group stage instead of their originally assigned qualifying round.
Last season, Olympiakos benefited from this rule because European champions Paris Saint-Germain had already qualified as French league winners.
Olympiakos finished seven points behind AEK Athens in the Greek Super League last season, but this season the standings appear to be shifting.
Olympiakos suffered a 1-0 home defeat to AEK Athens, who fielded former Hearts left-back James Penrice after a two-game absence, leaving Olympiakos five points behind the league leaders.
Additionally, Olympiakos have dropped to third place behind PAOK Salonica, who drew 0-0 at home against Panathinaikos, with former Celtic left-back Greg Taylor an unused substitute.
With five games remaining in the title play-offs, where the top four teams play each other twice, statistical analysis suggests Olympiakos have only a 16% chance of securing their 49th domestic title.
Olympiakos currently hold the highest coefficient among clubs from countries outside Europe's top six leagues, but if they fail to retain the Greek title, Rangers would be next in line to gain direct entry to the Champions League group stage.
Rangers supporters will be closely watching upcoming matches, including AEK Athens vs. PAOK and Panathinaikos vs. Olympiakos on Sunday, 19 April.
Implications for Celtic and Hearts
Why would Hearts and Celtic not benefit from this rule similarly?
Currently, Olympiakos rank 34th in the UEFA club coefficient table, with Rangers close behind at 37th.
Celtic rank 58th, and Hearts are much lower at 154th. Therefore, if both Rangers and Olympiakos fail to win their leagues, the next clubs in line for direct group stage entry would be Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk or Hungary's Ferencvaros.
Liverpool could also impact these chances, as they are the only team in this season's Champions League quarter-finals not currently qualified through their domestic league position.
A guaranteed spot in the Champions League group stage next season would provide a valuable boost to Scotland's UEFA coefficient, which has declined due to recent results, although the benefits would be realized only after several years.
This season, Celtic finished 21st in the Europa League, while Rangers were 32nd out of 36 teams.
Aberdeen and Hibernian failed to progress through Europa League qualifiers, with only Aberdeen reaching the Conference League group stage; Hibernian and Dundee United did not advance.
Scotland will lose one Champions League place after next season, and its overall allocation in UEFA competitions will decrease from five to four, with teams entering at earlier qualifying rounds.
The situation is expected to worsen before improving, and Rangers will aim to improve Scotland's coefficient by securing direct Champions League group stage entry next season.
Rangers recently secured a narrow victory over Dundee United.
