Atletico's Defensive Strength Under Simeone
Since Diego Simeone assumed the managerial role at Atletico Madrid in 2011, the club has conceded fewer goals than any other current La Liga team. His arrival marked a significant turning point for Atletico, transforming them from an inconsistent side struggling both domestically and in European competitions into a competitive team regularly contending for trophies and Champions League success.
The Argentine coach led Atletico to their first La Liga title in 18 years in 2014, a team he once played for as a combative midfielder during their 1996 championship. He later ended the dominance of Real Madrid and Barcelona by securing the league title again in 2021.
Despite his long tenure exceeding 14 years, speculation regarding Simeone's future has intensified, particularly following the introduction of new majority stakeholders at Atletico who may seek changes in leadership. Although the 55-year-old remains under contract until June 2027, uncertainty persists about his next steps.
Currently, Atletico Madrid holds fourth place in La Liga, trailing league leaders Barcelona by 16 points. The two clubs are set to face each other three times within the next two weeks, including La Liga fixtures and the Champions League quarter-finals. This context has divided supporters on whether the club should continue to build around Simeone.
Atletico's Transformation Under Simeone
Simeone's managerial record at Atletico is indisputable. He has managed the club in 786 matches, achieving 465 wins, 170 draws, and 151 losses over more than 14 and a half seasons, making him one of the longest-serving managers in global football.
Atletico appointed Simeone in December 2011, offering him his first major managerial role in European football. Previously, he had saved Italian side Catania from Serie A relegation and enjoyed success in Argentina with River Plate and Estudiantes.
When Simeone took over, Atletico had just been eliminated from the Copa del Rey by third-tier Albacete and were positioned 10th in La Liga, 21 points behind the leaders. Under his leadership, Atletico won the Europa League in his first season, followed by the UEFA Super Cup and the Copa del Rey in the 2012–13 season.
From the 2013-14 season onward, Atletico qualified for the Champions League every year, reaching two finals but losing narrowly to rivals Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016. Competing regularly at Europe's highest level became the club's standard.
Atletico supporter Guillermo Myela highlights Simeone's impact on the club's mentality:
"We went from being 'El Pupas - the jinxed ones', to a club that can compete against Barcelona and Real Madrid without fear. The connection that he has with the club and the fans is something that you rarely see in modern football. He lives for Atletico Madrid."
Simeone is the club's most decorated manager, and supporter Javier del Amo regards him as "one of the biggest icons in our history." Del Amo adds:
"One of his biggest achievements is getting the fans identified again with the team."
Lifelong fan Dani Ruiz concurs:
"He is the epitome of Atletico and what modern football has become."
New Ownership, New Opportunities?
For much of his tenure, Simeone's position at Atletico appeared secure. However, cracks emerged around the 2022–23 seasons as consecutive campaigns without major trophies and early European eliminations raised questions about whether the club's defensive style had become predictable.
At that time, Simeone addressed the media:
"Since arriving at the club, I have given everything. I will always give everything, until the last day I am here."
While loyal to Atletico, Simeone has expressed interest in managing other former clubs in the future. In November 2025, prior to a Champions League match against Inter Milan, he stated:
"It doesn't depend on just me, but in my coaching career I can imagine myself managing Inter [Milan] one day. I think it will happen one day."
These questions intensified following the acquisition of Atletico by new majority owners Apollo Sports Capital in March. The new leadership has introduced fresh perspectives and elevated expectations.
Chief Executive Officer Miguel Angel Gil emphasized the importance of consistency:
"I want to continue to build on our great legacy on and off the pitch for our fans, our players, coaches and staff, and our community."
This transition has reignited debate among fans, who remain divided on whether Simeone should continue or step aside.
Fans' Perspectives – 'A Toxic Relationship'?
Supporters like Dani Ruiz believe the decision to leave should rest with Simeone:
"He's been there to defend the fans and to embody what fans thought at the time. He means a lot to us and the fans love him. Those fans who have said he should leave over the past few years are a bit short-sighted. Simeone deserves to stay as long as he wants and he deserves to decide when he wants to leave himself. I would love him to stay beyond 2027."
Javier del Amo also anticipates Simeone's continued presence:
"I want what Simeone wants. He is so special for us so I want the best for him. What is the best? Diego is the only person who knows that. Maybe his tenure is coming to an end at some point but Simeone and Atleti still have beautiful moments to experience together."
Conversely, Guillermo Myela describes his feelings toward Simeone as akin to a "toxic relationship":
"I love him and I cherish those beautiful memories that he created and will always appreciate everything that he has done for us. But I sometimes feel that the best for both would be to move on. The Simeone of 2026 is not the same guy who came to the club 16 years ago. A lot of coaches from other teams have already 'cracked his code' when it comes to football tactics, and his approach is not as innovative or efficient as it used to be. I have hope in the new management and I have faith that they are willing to invest in the club and make big signings. But I think that we need to adapt to current football and change our ways a bit."
Presently, Simeone's focus remains on a demanding April schedule for Atletico Madrid. The team faces Barcelona in La Liga this weekend, followed by two Champions League quarter-final matches against the same opponent. Three days after the second leg, Atletico will contest the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad in Seville, where Simeone aims to secure a ninth trophy as Atletico manager. Decisions regarding his future are expected to be postponed until after these critical fixtures.
