Katie McCabe Joins Chelsea Following Arsenal Exit
Chelsea have secured the signing of Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe after her contract with Arsenal expired. The 30-year-old defender concluded an 11-year tenure at Arsenal, during which she made 305 appearances.
McCabe was a pivotal figure in Arsenal's Women's Super League era, contributing significantly to their 2019 league title triumph. Known for her versatility, she primarily plays as a full-back but is also capable of performing as a winger or centre-back.
Notably, McCabe was absent from Arsenal's celebratory parade on Sunday that marked their Champions Cup victory in February, signaling her imminent departure from the club.
Chelsea's interest in McCabe has been longstanding, and they successfully outmaneuvered competition from WSL champions Manchester City to finalize her transfer. Chelsea initially approached McCabe in 2015, but she chose to join Arsenal at that time. Another bid was reportedly made by Chelsea in 2023 but was declined.
In April, Arsenal offered McCabe a late contract renewal; however, she opted to explore other opportunities, with both Chelsea and Manchester City expressing interest.
McCabe played a crucial role in Arsenal's 2025 Champions League victory and has also earned an FA Cup, three League Cups, and one Champions Cup medal throughout her career.
Her move to Chelsea places her at one of Arsenal's main rivals, a club she helped eliminate from the Champions League quarter-finals in April. During the second leg of that tie, Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor was sent off after reacting to a hair pull on Chelsea player Alyssa Thompson by McCabe.
Chelsea recently won the World Sevens Series on Saturday, where Thompson humorously reenacted the hair pull incident during the team's entrance.
McCabe's addition strengthens a Chelsea squad that faced disappointment after narrowly missing out on the WSL title last season and continues to pursue its first Champions League trophy.
The impact of McCabe's signing on Chelsea's squad dynamics remains uncertain, especially with Real Madrid reportedly pursuing Niamh Charles and Lucy Bronze, both out of contract this summer, and no confirmation yet on their contract extensions.
