Celtic's recent loss to Dundee United deepens their Scottish Premiership title challenge, trailing Hearts by five points with seven games left. Despite setbacks and defensive struggles, manager Martin O'Neill insists the team remains in contention.

Unexpected Defeat for Celtic in Title Race

Celtic's loss to Dundee United may not have been entirely unforeseen given the unpredictable nature of this Scottish Premiership season. Remarkably, only one weekend has seen the top three teams all secure victories.

With Hearts and Rangers both winning on Saturday, the title race continues to be highly competitive and unpredictable.

Just a week ago, Celtic had become the bookmakers' favourites to claim the title following a slip by Hearts. However, they now trail Hearts by five points with seven games remaining.

The question arises whether this latest setback for Martin O'Neill's side could be decisive.

No team has ever won the Scottish top division with as many as eight defeats, and Celtic's current loss count exceeds the combined losses of Hearts (five) and Rangers (two).

Compared to this stage last season, Celtic are 17 points behind and have a goal difference of 22, down from 72.

The decline has been significant, but with only a five-point gap, can Celtic truly be ruled out?

Struggling Dundee United Halt Celtic's Momentum

Dundee United defeated Celtic again, further damaging their title hopes.

Throughout the season, Celtic have produced performances similar to their display at Tannadice but have often secured three points, such as late wins against Kilmarnock and Livingston or a narrow victory at Falkirk.

However, against Dundee United, Celtic appeared overwhelmed on a pitch dominated by sand rather than grass.

The home side created more chances, demonstrated greater quality in the attacking third, and posed a more consistent threat. Celtic's front three struggled throughout the match.

"They couldn't create anything," said former Parkhead goalkeeper Pat Bonner. "They've no striker that can turn a game when they're not playing well.
"I've seen it in the past, many a good striker that hasn't offered anything in a game but they have that ability to get you a goal when you were struggling.
"That doesn't seem to be there at the moment."

Kelechi Iheanacho made his first league start since October, having only one substitute appearance and a 35-minute cameo in the League Cup final since then.

Tomas Cvancara, who has started five league games since joining in January, was absent due to illness. Junior Adamu, another winter signing, has started twice but was substituted at halftime in both matches.

"They look fragile," Bonner added regarding Celtic. "Celtic are really under pressure now. The question will be from many now, is that their championship gone?"

O'Neill Remains Determined Despite Setback

Martin O'Neill experienced his first defeat in 21 matches against Dundee United. This was another unexpected statistic overturned.

Additional records were broken: United had not beaten Celtic by more than one goal since 1990, and Celtic's 34 goals conceded mark their worst defensive record ever in a Premiership season, with seven games still to play.

"Of course, it's a concern," O'Neill told Scotland. "It's a big blow to us. We're beaten and, with games running out, we can't really afford to do that, but we're still in it.
"It's been difficult since I've set foot in the place both times [this season]. Today is a blow but we're not finished yet."

However, O'Neill faces a formidable challenge.

Celtic have not lost eight games in a season since 1999-2000 and have scored only 56 goals so far, their lowest tally at this stage since 1994-95.

They have led the league for only one week in a campaign now 31 games old.

Upcoming Fixtures Before the League Split

In two weeks, Celtic will visit Dens Park, a venue where they previously lost earlier this season when Dundee were struggling and Brendan Rodgers was still manager.

Following that, Celtic will host St Mirren. They have narrowly beaten the Paisley side 1-0 twice in league matches this season, but their League Cup final defeat at Hampden remains a concern.

Rangers are set to host Dundee United at Ibrox before traveling to Falkirk. League leaders Hearts will travel to Livingston and then host Motherwell.

Given the unpredictable nature of this campaign, it is difficult to determine which team has the easier schedule.

Celtic must improve their concerning performances, as several signs foreshadowed the heavy defeat at Tannadice, which they cannot afford to repeat.

"Sometimes you just have to eat humble pie," said captain Callum McGregor after the match.

Based on this game, Celtic appear to lack the drive necessary to challenge their rivals effectively.
