Schmeichel Undergoes First Shoulder Surgery
Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has completed the first of two scheduled shoulder surgeries as he aims to continue his playing career despite injury setbacks.
The 39-year-old Danish international, who serves as Denmark's number one goalkeeper, disclosed the severity of his injuries during a live radio interview last week.
In an update posted on Instagram, Schmeichel stated:
"First shoulder operation done, everything went well.
Now full focus on recovery and preparing for the next one. Thanks for all the messages over the past few weeks, it means a lot."
Recovery and Career Outlook
Schmeichel, who joined Celtic in 2024 after departing Anderlecht and is set to become a free agent this summer, faces a recovery period that could extend up to a year.
Despite some criticism regarding his recent performances for Celtic—he has not appeared in a match since 22 February—the goalkeeper revealed he had been competing while managing significant pain for several months.
Interim Celtic manager Martin O'Neill expressed surprise at the extent of Schmeichel's shoulder injury.
"I was surprised at the severity of the injury," O'Neill commented.
