Wilson's Vital Role for Wales

Harry Wilson has earned 67 caps for Wales since making his international debut at age 16 in 2013. Craig Bellamy, the Wales head coach, has emphasized Wilson's critical importance to the national team, describing the Fulham attacking midfielder as a player Wales cannot afford to lose.

This season, Wilson has been in exceptional form for both club and country, scoring nine goals and providing six assists in the Premier League. The 28-year-old has also been a consistent performer for Wales over an extended period, with 12 of his 17 international goals scored in the last three years.

Injury and Fitness Update

Wilson recently caused concern when he suffered an ankle injury while playing for Fulham against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month. However, he returned to action last weekend and has confirmed his fitness ahead of Wales' upcoming World Cup play-off matches.

Wales will face Bosnia-Herzegovina in a World Cup play-off semi-final at Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday, 26 March. The winner will then host either Italy or Northern Ireland in the final, scheduled five days later.

Bellamy on Wilson's Impact

"He [Wilson] is definitely one of those players," said Bellamy.
"We do have a big squad and we keep trying to improve that, and we have to because the reality is the biggest squads stand a better chance to qualify.
"But we're still fragile. There's still one or two players we can't afford to lose. I'd like us to get out of that situation, and Harry's definitely turned into one of those players.
"You look at our goals, you look at our assists, he's played a huge part in that department. When he hasn't played, you can see the difference."

Wilson's Return Timely Amid Injuries

Wilson's return is particularly timely as Wales will be without several key players for the play-offs due to injury, including Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies, Wrexham striker Kieffer Moore, and centre-back Chris Mepham, who is currently on loan at West Bromwich Albion from Bournemouth.

The former Liverpool and Bournemouth winger notably scored a hat-trick in Wales' last match, a 7-1 victory over North Macedonia in November, which secured home advantage against Bosnia.

Looking Ahead

Bellamy hopes other players will eventually emerge to fill Wilson's role should he ever be unavailable. Since the retirement of Gareth Bale in 2023—widely regarded as Wales' greatest player—Wilson has stepped up to become a key figure in the squad.

"We haven't had anyone to quite move into that role. I do believe that's a matter of time," Bellamy said.
"But at this present moment, especially the form he's been in this season, we just hope he's fit."
