Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid: Champions League Quarter-Final Second Leg Live

Manuel Neuer: A Goalkeeping Legend

Is Manuel Neuer the greatest goalkeeper of all time? Probably not; that honour likely remains with Lev Yashin. However, Neuer is, in my view, a clear second. In the first leg of this tie, Neuer made nine saves, including two remarkable stops, demonstrating that at 40 years old he remains one of the world’s top goalkeepers. While other keepers have played into their forties, it often seemed more of a novelty. Neuer continues at the highest level because his quality is undeniable.

His skill, trophy haul, longevity, and the innovation he brought to the game—especially early in his career through his proactive style of coming off his line and playing with his feet—place him ahead of other greats like Iker Casillas, Gianluigi Buffon, Gordon Banks, Dino Zoff, and Peter Schmeichel in my opinion.

In this second leg, Neuer will make his 137th start for Bayern Munich, surpassing Lionel Messi’s 136. Only Iker Casillas, with 149 starts, has more. Should Neuer extend his contract and play next season, which appears likely, he will overtake Casillas.

Remembering José Emilio Santamaría

Earlier today, José Emilio Santamaría, a four-time European Cup winner with Real Madrid, passed away at the age of 96. The Uruguay international joined Madrid in 1957 and went on to win one Intercontinental Cup, six La Liga titles, and one Spanish Cup, making 337 appearances over nine seasons.

“Santamaria will always be remembered as one of the great symbols of our club. He was part of a team that will remain in the memory of all madridistas and football fans worldwide,” Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said in a statement.

Santamaría earned 25 caps for Uruguay and also represented Spain 16 times. He played for Uruguay at the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland and later for Spain at the 1962 World Cup in Chile.

After retiring as a player, he managed Spain’s Olympic team at the 1968 Mexico City and 1980 Moscow Games. He also coached Spain at the 1982 World Cup on home soil and spent seven seasons in charge of Espanyol, overseeing 252 matches. ()

Recent Form and Context

You can now likely add last week’s first leg to this list of significant moments.

It was a contrasting weekend for both teams, both of whom fielded significantly changed lineups. Real Madrid lost their last three games across all competitions, which aided Barcelona’s title challenge, while Bayern Munich continued their dominant run by setting an all-time season scoring record and extending their Bundesliga lead to 12 points with five games remaining.

Team News

Bayern Munich (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Stanisic, Upamecano, Tah, Laimer; Kimmich, Pavlovic; Olise, Gnabry, Díaz; Kane. Subs: Prescott, Kim Min-jae, Urbig, Goretzka, Musiala, Jackson, Davies, Ito, Guerreiro.

Bayern Munich field the same starting XI as last week’s match at the Bernabéu. Tom Bischof is sidelined with a small muscle fiber tear in his left calf and is not part of Kompany’s squad.

Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa has selected an aggressively attacking lineup. Aurélien Tchouaméni is suspended, but Eduardo Camavinga is on the bench in favour of Brahim Díaz. After being rested over the weekend, Trent Alexander-Arnold starts at right back, while Mendy is preferred at left back over Fran García and Álvaro Carreras.

Match Significance

This fixture is one of the biggest in European football. The outright favourites this season, Bayern Munich, face the most successful European club of all time, Real Madrid. This quarter-final clash will determine who faces the reigning champions, Paris Saint-Germain, in the semi-final.

The quarter-finals are often considered the most exciting stage of the Champions League—close enough to the final to inspire dreams of glory but still filled with unpredictability. The games come thick and fast, and currently, only a single goal separates Bayern and Real Madrid, with the Germans holding a narrow advantage from last week’s match at the Bernabéu. While this was a remarkable result for Vincent Kompany’s side, Bayern may feel frustrated that their lead is not more substantial. One certainty is that Real Madrid should never be underestimated in this competition.

There is also an English dimension to this continental night, with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Trent Alexander-Arnold all aiming to make an impact on Europe’s biggest stage. Kane has yet to win Europe’s premier club trophy, while Bellingham and Alexander-Arnold will seek to reaffirm their credentials for the England national team.

Player Perspectives

When asked about Kane’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or, Jude Bellingham said on Tuesday:

“It seems like they’re going to win the Bundesliga, which obviously hurts me considering my brother is at Dortmund, and I was a player there. Again, it depends on what he does with England, and hopefully, we can try and stop them from winning the Champions League tomorrow, which will obviously have a big effect.
He’s a sensational player. It’s a pleasure to play with him with the national team. I think he’s amazing. He’s showing everyone the last two or three years he’s reached a level where he’s almost perfected his craft in terms of what he can do as a striker.”

The Allianz Arena is set to host a thrilling encounter between two football giants.
