Arsenal Legend Beth Mead to Leave Club
Arsenal has announced that forward Beth Mead will leave the club at the conclusion of the current season, describing her as a "legend of the club."
The 31-year-old England international has been a significant figure for Arsenal, scoring 86 goals in 263 appearances since her transfer from Sunderland in 2017.
During her tenure, Mead has contributed to Arsenal's victories in the Women's Champions League, Women's Super League, FIFA Champions Cup, and three League Cups.
"Beth has made a huge contribution to our football club over nine years, and will go down in history as one of our best forwards and a legend of the club," said Arsenal director of women's football Clare Wheatley.
"Beth is such a special person and will always be welcome at Arsenal. I know our supporters will join me in wishing Beth happiness and success in her future endeavours."
Interest in signing Mead reportedly comes from London City Lionesses and Manchester City. Mead was named player of the tournament and won the Golden Boot as she helped England secure the Euro 2022 title.
Mead's Injury and Recovery
Mead endured a serious setback in November 2022 when she ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), causing her to miss the 2023 World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
After an 11-month recovery, Mead returned to competitive play and was part of the England squad that successfully defended their European Championship title at Euro 2025.
Key Contributions and Recent Performances
Last season, Mead appeared as a substitute in Arsenal's Champions League final against Barcelona, where she provided the assist for Stina Blackstenius' winning goal, securing Arsenal's first Champions League title in 18 years—an achievement Mead described as one of her "greatest highlights in an Arsenal shirt."
In the current season, she has made 27 appearances across the Women's Super League and Champions League, including 11 as a substitute, and has scored five goals.
Other Departures
Arsenal also announced that midfielder Victoria Pelova, who joined from Ajax in January 2023, will leave the club at the end of the season. Pelova has made 87 appearances for Arsenal, scoring six goals.
Mead's Departure Context and Future Prospects
Mead's exit is expected by fans but marks the end of a significant era for Arsenal, as she has been one of the club's most influential players over the past decade.
Known for her versatility, movement, and finishing ability, Mead remains a player who would be a starter for most Women's Super League teams despite being 31 years old.
In recent years, her playing time has been more limited, often coming off the bench. With the next FIFA Women's World Cup scheduled in Brazil in a year, it is understandable that Mead seeks a club offering more regular minutes to maintain her position in England manager Sarina Wiegman's plans.
