Allegri Dismissed After Milan Miss Champions League
AC Milan have terminated the contract of head coach Massimiliano Allegri after the club failed to secure qualification for the Champions League. The club's leadership labeled the season as an "unequivocal failure."
Milan dropped from third to fifth place in Serie A following a 2-1 loss to Cagliari on the final matchday, resulting in the team missing out on Champions League football for the second consecutive year.
Inter Milan, Napoli, Roma, and Como—qualifying for the first time in their history—will represent Italy in Europe's premier club competition next season. AC Milan, alongside Juventus, will participate in the Europa League.
Club Statement and Leadership Changes
RedBird Capital, the American investment group that acquired AC Milan in 2022, issued a statement regarding the season's outcome:
"For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto,"
"The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night's disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure."
"It is now time for change and a comprehensive reorganization of football operations."
In addition to Allegri, chief executive Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada have also departed the club.
Allegri's Tenure and Career
Massimiliano Allegri, aged 58, returned to manage AC Milan in May of the previous year, succeeding Sergio Conceicao. This marked his second tenure with the Rossoneri, having previously managed the club from 2010 to 2014. During his earlier spell, he secured the Serie A title in the 2010-11 season and the Italian Super Cup in the subsequent season.
In the recent campaign, Milan lost seven of their last 14 matches, while their rivals Inter Milan claimed their second Serie A title in three seasons.
