Aaron Rodgers Signs New Contract with Steelers

Veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, ranked fourth all-time in touchdown passes and fifth in passing yards, has agreed to a new one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, extending his NFL career into its 22nd season.

The 42-year-old had not previously confirmed whether he would continue playing or return to Pittsburgh, where he spent the last season.

The 2011 Super Bowl champion and four-time league Most Valuable Player has now committed to continuing his professional career.

Last summer, Rodgers accepted a one-year contract with the Steelers valued at $13.65 million (£10 million), which was among the NFL's lowest annual salaries for starting quarterbacks.

His new contract reportedly guarantees $22 million (£16.5 million), with potential incentives raising the total to $25 million (£18.8 million).

Recent Career and Coaching Changes

Rodgers played a key role in helping the Steelers reach the playoffs last season. However, head coach Mike Tomlin, who had led the team for 19 years, was replaced by Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy previously served as head coach for most of Rodgers' 18-year tenure with the Green Bay Packers, during which they won a Super Bowl together.

After departing the Packers, Rodgers joined the New York Jets in 2023 but suffered a torn Achilles tendon during his debut game, sidelining him for the remainder of the season. Following a disappointing second season with the Jets, he was released.

Performance and Future Prospects

Rodgers, whose mobility has declined, missed one game for Pittsburgh in 2025 due to a broken wrist.

Despite an inconsistent season from the Steelers, he led the team to a 10-7 record and secured their first AFC North title since 2020. However, they were defeated by the Houston Texans in the postseason.

With Rodgers' future still uncertain, the Steelers added quarterback Drew Allar in the third round of the NFL Draft in April. The team may consider developing Allar or 2025 draft pick Will Howard as potential successors to Rodgers.
