Fatal Incident at North West 200

The rider who died in an incident at the North West 200 has been identified as Kamil Holan, a competitor from the Czech Republic.

The 48-year-old was involved in a crash at Station Corner during the opening Superbike qualifying session on Thursday morning and later died from his injuries.

Holan's identity was initially withheld at the request of his family, who had "given their approval for the event to continue," according to a statement released by the North West 200 organisers on Thursday afternoon.

"The session was immediately red-flagged and emergency services attended the scene but unfortunately the rider succumbed to his injuries," the statement said.
"Coleraine and District Motor Club, the organisers of the races, offer our sincere condolences to the family and team."

The remaining practice sessions scheduled for Thursday morning were postponed and held in the evening instead of the three planned races.

Historical Context and Rider Background

Holan is the first fatality at the North West 200 since Malachi Mitchell-Thomas was killed in a Supertwins race in 2016. He is the 20th rider to lose their life in the 97-year history of the event.

As one of several international riders competing at the road race in Northern Ireland, Holan, who resided in Prague, made his North West 200 debut in 2023.

His most notable achievement was winning the Newcomers 'A' race at the Manx Grand Prix in 2012, becoming the first Czech rider to win at that event.

Holan also competed at the Isle of Man TT, achieving a best finish of 20th place in the 2018 Superbike race, and was a regular participant in European road racing events.

In the 2019 Ulster Grand Prix, Holan secured two 14th place finishes in the Supersport and Superstock classes.

Tributes and Race Schedule Adjustments

Hefty74, Holan's racing team, paid tribute to the Czech rider, describing him as "a wonderful friend and a man of great character."

"Kamil, you were an inspiration, support and a partner in life and on the track. Your humility, passion and smile will be missed every second," Hefty74 posted on Facebook.
"Your legacy will live on in Hefty74 and in our hearts. We express our deepest and most sincere condolences to his entire family and all his loved ones."

Race organisers confirmed that the races originally planned for Thursday night will not be rescheduled to Saturday's six-race program.
