Jacob Bethell to Undergo Medical Assessment in UK

England’s top-order batter Jacob Bethell is set to return to the United Kingdom for a comprehensive medical evaluation following a finger injury sustained during the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Bethell was absent from the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad in their recent defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday. RCB captain Rajat Patidar confirmed that the 22-year-old had injured his finger.

While RCB has not disclosed the severity of the injury, Bethell’s absence raises concerns ahead of England’s first Test match of the summer against New Zealand, scheduled to commence on 4 June at Lord’s.

England and Wales Cricket Board Statement

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Saturday afternoon that Bethell will undergo further medical checks upon his return to the UK. The ECB issued a statement:

“The England and Wales Cricket Board has agreed with Royal Challengers Bangalore that top-order batter Jacob Bethell will return to the UK after sustaining a left ring finger injury while playing in the Indian Premier League.
He will be fully assessed and monitored by the England Men’s medical team on his return to determine his availability for selection for the Rothesay first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s.”

Impact on England’s Test Squad

Bethell is slated to bat at number three, having scored in the final Ashes Test in January. However, due to RCB’s participation in the IPL playoffs, he was already expected to miss the upcoming training camp in Loughborough next week.

If Bethell is deemed unfit to play against New Zealand, Somerset’s James Rew is likely to make his debut, providing both batting and wicketkeeping options. Additionally, Jofra Archer will miss the Lord’s Test as he is currently engaged with Rajasthan Royals. Archer is expected to return to England too late for selection in the first Test and is instead aiming to participate in the second Test at the Oval.
