England Weigh Test Debut for Sonny Baker with Weather in Mind

England have named a streamlined squad of 12 players for the first Test of the summer against New Zealand at Lord’s on Thursday. The team management has delayed a final decision on whether to award Hampshire’s fast bowler Sonny Baker his Test debut, adopting a cautious approach that takes into account the prevailing weather conditions.

This strategy echoes the approach taken during the first Ashes Test last November, when England initially named a 12-man squad including both Mark Wood and Shoaib Bashir before ultimately selecting Wood for his additional pace. In the current scenario, Bashir has been chosen over Rehan Ahmed as the primary spinner, while Jacob Bethell, having recovered from a finger injury, remains available and can contribute as a bowler if necessary.

The final playing eleven will be confirmed based on the latest weather forecasts. Baker is likely to be preferred, potentially replacing Gus Atkinson, only if the forecast predicts clearer conditions over the weekend.

“We’ve got a very good idea of the XI we want,” said Brendon McCullum, the England coach. “But we want to see how the weather plays out, and we’ll work out whether we want the extra air speed if all of a sudden it becomes 35C and flattens out. Or we stick to what’s tried and tested at Lord’s and remain with more of the type of bowlers that’ll extract some movement with some overhead conditions. We’ll also play a spinner. We’re confident in what we’re going to pick, and we think it gives us the best opportunity against New Zealand at Lord’s. We want to stick to what we think is going to be required in these conditions against this opposition.”

The 12-man squad consists of captain Ben Stokes, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), and Josh Tongue.

Atkinson has demonstrated excellent form in his two previous Tests at Lord’s, claiming 19 wickets at an impressive average of 10.94. He also scored a century at the venue, which remains his only first-class hundred. Baker, aged 23, made his Twenty20 and One-Day International debuts last summer, with performances that have been varied.

“It’s that airspeed from him. He’s quick,” McCullum said. “I think he’s going to be a cricketer that the country really gets behind too when he does play. He charges in, he leaves everything out there. Some guys have a bit more rhythmical component to their style. I think Sonny is full noise. He’s an exciting proposition and if it’s not in this Test his time will come.”
