On the adjacent table, Northern Ireland's former world number one Mark Allen is trailing 3-5 against China's Zhang Anda. Their second session is scheduled for Sunday morning.
Williams Leads Kowalski in Historic Match
In the afternoon session, three-time world champion Mark Williams secured a 6-3 lead over 22-year-old Antoni Kowalski, the world number 69 and the first Polish player to compete at the Crucible.
Tributes to John Virgo Before Play
Before Saturday's play commenced, numerous prominent figures in snooker, including the BBC television team, paid tribute to former player and commentator John Virgo, who passed away in February at the age of 79. A minute's applause was observed in his honor.
BBC presenter Hazel Irvine said John was "universally loved by everyone in this sport and beyond - he really was the voice of snooker".
On Thursday, a memorial service for Virgo was held at Sheffield Cathedral, located a short walk from the Crucible.
"The cathedral was packed and we gave John a wonderful send-off as he was a very special man," 1985 world champion Dennis Taylor told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"I knew him for more than 50 years and he was a great all-round entertainer. There's a big gap here in the Crucible this year with John not being with us."
Zhao’s Form and Match Details
Zhao Xintong made history as the first Chinese player to win the World Championship by defeating Mark Williams 18-12 in the 2025 final. This season, Zhao has won four tournaments, including three of the last five ranking events, elevating him to fourth in the world rankings. Many players and analysts have tipped him as a strong contender to win this year's championship.
During the opening session, Zhao won three of the first four frames, including a break of 123 in frame four. However, Highfield capitalized on Zhao's errors to claim three consecutive frames, featuring a break of 86 in the fifth frame.
Highfield, 35, returned to the World Snooker Tour last year after recovering from a broken wrist sustained in an e-scooter accident in 2023. He secured his place at the Crucible by winning four qualifying matches.
Highfield had opportunities to capture the final frame of the session but missed a yellow ball off the spot early on, allowing Zhao to regain the lead.
Zhang Leads Allen After Morning Session
On table two, only eight of the scheduled nine frames were played in the morning session. Zhang Anda, ranked 22nd in the world, holds a two-frame lead as he seeks his first Crucible victory after five previous first-round exits.
Mark Allen, a Crucible semi-finalist in 2009 and 2023, made a maximum 147 break at this venue last year during his last-16 loss to Chris Wakelin. However, Allen has yet to register a half-century break against Zhang, who has compiled two centuries—129 in frame two and 109 in frame five—as well as three additional breaks of at least 58.
Williams Leads Kowalski in Evening Session
Antoni Kowalski, who is the same age as Mark Williams' oldest child (51), showed no signs of nerves in his Crucible debut. He made a break of 82 in the first frame, which was the only frame he led during the session.
Williams benefited from five consecutive fouls by Kowalski to take the second frame on the black ball. A break of 85 in the following frame put Williams ahead.
Williams closed the session by winning the last three frames, including a comeback from 41-0 behind in the ninth frame. Their match will be played to a finish on Sunday evening.
